Jumperoo vs. walker

Are either of these necessary, or is one better than the other? I was looking at jumperoos because they seem to have a lot more toys, and the baby is stationary so I don't have to worry about him/her getting too far. My mother called and told me that she is going to buy us a walker, but I don't know if I should just ask her to get us the jumperoo instead?

Re: Jumperoo vs. walker

  • I asked some friends with kids this very question today since my mom is insisting to me that a walker is better than a stationary jumper.  I too love that the jumperoos have lots of fun colors/toys/etc.  My friends basically said that walkers are discouraged by many pediatricians and the jumperoos are much more recommended.

The bolded is true. Walkers have been banned here for a long time for multple reasons. Stick with the jumperoo.

Agreed.  DH's cousin is a physical therapist and she hates walkers.  They also pose a safety hazard since the baby's moving around and can easily bump into things and tip over.  We had a jumperoo and exersaucer (at parent's) and loved both of them equally.

Thanks, ladies! I will just ask my mother to get the jumperoo. Can you elaborate on why they are banned or discouraged? My mother seems to think that a walker is an absolute necessity.

  • they're banned in canada and pediatricians discourage them because the baby could 'get away' fast and get into non-babyproofed things (i.e. grab onto a cord and pull a lamp onto their head, fall down stairs). quite honestly, i think the ban is silly because, well, watch your kid. that said, we had both a walker and a jumperoo and if i were to pick one, i'd pick the jumperoo because he used it longer.

  • I'd go with the jumperoo. We had an exersaucer and MIL had a jumperoo and though DS loved both, the jumperoo was the clear favorite.

  • The hospital I work for (a children's hospital) advises parents not to ever use walkers.  They are dangerous and a stationary item like an exersaucer or jumparoo is a much safer alternative.

  • I have both and the jumperoo is the favorite. We used them for different reasons though. The walker was used in the spring/summer in our backyard before DS could walk. He had reflux and always wanted to be in an upright position, standing position. The walker was cheap and folded small to keep in the garage. It was easy to pop up and put in the grass when we were hanging out in our backyard. We never left him unattended and he couldn't really get it moving in the grass anyway.

  • You really can't find walkers anymore. They are actually banned in some places. They can actually hinder crawling and walking because of the way they position the baby's legs. Also, they are dangerous because of issues with babies getting to dangerous objects and falling down stairs, etc.

This. My daughter looooooooved her fisher price jumperoo. The only reason we stopped using it was because she started walking.
