My EBF LO is 10 weeks and gaining weight at a very healthy pace (born at 6lb8oz, now 11lb7oz). Sh spits up A TON after each feeding. I am currently feeding every 3 hrs. Do I need to feed her for less time more often or can I just reduce the time she is feeding for? How will I know what to do?? I don't want to reduce the time/feed and have her go hungry.
Re: Help! Altering feeding to adjust for spit-up
Have you had her checked for reflux? Does she seem in pain or uncomfortable after/during feedings?
My son has really bad reflux and at times spits up an entire bottle. I do not feed again, rather I just wait until later when he shows his hungry signs. It's usually quicker than the normal 2 1/2 hours but not by much.
My son spits up a lot too! If he as a major spit-up, I don't feed him again, I just wait to show signs that he is hungry and be prepared that it will probably be sooner than usual.
I have started decreasing the length of feedings as well, I think that my son is just getting efficient at eating. I think that he would eat forever if I would let him! I take him off and just wait and see if he fusses. If he does, I try to offer him more but if he doesn't take it, then we're done!
More Green For Less Green
I've been having some luck with block feeding and only nursing 1 side per session. He still wants both sides but I just keep offering the same one so overall he eats a little less. Or at least doesn't deal w a big letdown from both and end up gulping down too much. He seems much happier when his stomach isn't as full. And less gassy too. And since he's gained 6 plus pounds since birth I'm not worried about weight gain. He seems satisfied so we're going w it. He does want to eat every 2 hrs unless napping though. But I'm ok with that because the overall nursing sessions are shorter.
Good luck. Spitup sucks but as long as baby isn't unhappy and they are keeping down enough to gain weight it's ok. I feel like I'm singlehandedly keeping Tide in business!
