Prevacid, anyone?

My son's reflux has not responded at all to Zantac. It's actually gotten much worse, to the point that he's arching back in pain 5 minutes into every nursing session, and often refusing to relatch.

My pedi just prescribed Prevacid, and I'm wondering how quickly I can expect to see a difference forgot to ask the pedi. Do any of you have any experience?

Also, any tips on dispensing it? We are using the dissolvable tablets, but the residue keeps getting stuck in the dropper. He's only getting half a tablet, so I want to make sure he gets it all.

TIA!

Re: Prevacid, anyone?

  • My baby just had the cough, so I dont know how soon it'll take away pain

As far as the little balls getting stuck- we gave it to him dissolved in water on baby spoon and then washed it down with another spoonful.

Also, the droppers that have that little rubber suction thing at the top (as opposed to the syringe types) seem to work alot better as well.

  • We just put the Pill in his mouth between his cheek and gums. It dissolves quickly. He has been on it for a month, it took about Two weeks for me to really notice a big difference in his behavior.

  • I heard 7-10 days.

For us, we were on a dose that wasn't doing much, so they increased one of the doses (morning) at the 2 week post meds check up. It helped but not a lot (no projectile, but still a ton of spit up, especially in her crib), so we upped it again. Almost immediately, within 1-2 days (feels like immediately), the spitting up decreased a TON.

We have the compound form. The pharmacy makes it to a liquid and it's only good for 10-14 days in the fridge.

  • I don't remember how quickly we saw results, but if you have trouble with the capsules/tablets, you could get the compounded form.  That's what we used at that age.  We just slowly syringed it directly into his mouth.
