Anybody NOT sleep training?

I'm not using anybody's particular method for sleep training, unless you count my own. I guess I haven't found a huge need. My dd isn't the greatest sleeper, but she's pretty much made herself her own nighttime sleep schedule. She still gets up once a night for a feeding/diaper change. She's relatively easy to put down. Yes, I put her down asleep after a bottle. I dont necessarily see anything wrong with this at this point. Naps aren't very long or consistent right now. I don't really want to "buy into" anybody's methods. It seems kind of silly to me. Anybody else using their own methods or not "training" per se?

Re: Anybody NOT sleep training?

  • We aren't doing any sort of sleep training. For naps she is at daycare and they let her nap when and where she wants. On the weekends we do the same. About 8:30 at night she starts getting fussy so I feed her, swaddle her, put her in bed, give her a paci and she is out in a minute or 2. Some nights she will wake at 4 and want to eat, but she goes right back to sleep after eating. Some nights she doesn't wake until 7 the next morning. I just let her do what she needs to do. It works for us.

  • OP, if I had your situation, I wouldn't mess with it. Before I had a baby, I never thought I'd do any sleep training. I was certain I'd never do any CIO.  Now, I understand why people do it. For the past 5 weeks, DD has been up every hour to 2 hours. It's exhausting and there seems to be no end in sight. We do things the "right" way according to books. We've had a bedtime routine since day one, put her to bed drowsy but awake, etc. No luck.

We aren't doing any sleep training yet, but if the situation hasn't changed by the time she's 6 months, we will start to consider some form of training. If I didn't work and commute an hour each way I think I'd be able to tough it out longer : (

  • Stepper,

I believe if the situation called for it, I would absolutely try some sort of training. We're in the transition period of moving, and I've already quit my job. Once I'm employed again and settled in,if she decides not to be a good nighttime sleeper, a change may be in order.

  • Nope. I eat and sleep when my body tells me to even on the days where my clock is a little off, and so does bud.

I didn't even know this had a name (pantley pull off/out or something) but my pedi suggested I take the bink or bottle out before he really falls asleep so that's the only adjustment I've made.

Im also alot more conscious of him getting sunlight during the day and keeping it dark at night

  • No sleep training for us. I nurse DS to sleep and he's in his crib by 8:30pm. He sometimes goes 10 hours straight and then he's up for the day, other nights he is up to eat after 8 hours, he's back in his crib within a half hour for another 2 hours. He always gets exactly 10 hours of night sleep.

Naps have always been a struggle. Now DS is starting to get tired at 2 regular times, but he's been sleeping on me. I'm planning on trying to get him in his crib for his long afternoon nap, but I'm not going to sleep train for that. We'll just try and be persistent. He'll figure it out eventually.

We are not right now because there is no reason to.  DD sleeps well most nights and does good with naps.  I would consider it if things change.

  • Not really.  DD sleeps good during the day in her swing mostly and will go 4ish hours at night, so she's usually up at 12, 4 and 8ish, give or take.  Longest we've gotten is 6 hours but she goes right back to sleep so I'm not complaining.

Oh yeah, I was just saying if it ain't broke, don't fix it : ) I hope she does well with the move!

I still have hope for DD, she's done 6 hour stretches before so I know she can do it again. Maybe tonight will be the night!

  • Nope, no sleep training for us. He is still up 2-3 times a night at least to eat, but is genuinely hungry every time. He used to wake every 2 hours or so to eat (not as a newborn, I mean as recently as 2 weeks ago) but he still seemed to be hungry every time so I didn't try to sleep train. I don't have any plans to unless he regresses drastically. Aside from waking at night he's a pretty good sleeper- goes down easily every time when I nurse or rock to sleep, sleeps in his bed just fine (I read all these posts about transitioning from a RnP or a swing), doesn't need a paci, painless transition from swaddle to sleep sack, etc- so I'm not going to complain.

  • We sleep trained our first.. But the new baby hasn't needed it.  She just goes to sleep and stays asleep for 8-10 hours at a time.  Hopefully she stays that way!

  • DS wakes up 6 to 8 times a night (10 on bad nights), won't go to sleep any earlier than 9:30 or 10:00 and wakes up no later than 8:00am. We aren't sleep training yet, but if he is still waking up 8 times or more a night when he is 6 months than we will consider a no cry method.

Wow!!!! My baby was that way for her first month or so. I think I would be losing my mind.

I am losing my mind. I am exhausted! Just no idea what to do or how to get him to sleep longer.

  • I agree with you OP. We are going with the flow on everything. LO's sleeping patterns in the beginning have been very detrimental to the amount of sleep that I was receiving at night, but he got better over time with no sleep training. It's not necessary to me and I never even heard of it until TB. I'm not judging or criticizing anyone's style of parenting btw- different methods work for different moms.

  • we're not sleep training.  because we don't have to, she goes down before 7pm, we dream feed her at 10, and she stays asleep until around 6am.

bahahahaha i win! i'm sure we'll get it later, with teething or the terrible twos, but for now, i've won the lottery!

This is almost exactly what we do. DS sleeps awesome in his crib every night and has been since we transitioned him to it at 8 weeks. However, his morning nap is always in the jogging stroller (we walk or run 6 days a week) and his long afternoon nap is ALWAYS on me. It's not a problem right now, because I really like the cuddle time and he just won't sleep in his crib or swing for more than 30 minutes at a time. I'm starting Massage Therapy school in February though so I'll have to break that habit before then. I've tried a couple times but he just won't have it. I don't know if I should sleep train or not. I just can't get anything done during that time, not even a bathroom trip!

  • Just my own, although I don?t nurse or bottle to sleep per my pedis suggestion, and it was the best ever. I dress, nurse, down awake. Thanks to this advice  I never had issues with having to make DD give it up she just naturally cut it out of her routine once solids were her main source of food at around 15 months..  My friend on the other hand had her 18-month old throwing things at her because she wanted a bottle so bad.  It was not fun.

Wow Redrose, I am completely in awe of you! I don't even think DS did this as a newborn and I was still losing it with the sleep deprivation! I don't know how you hold it together...but you are one patient mama!

  • I am not sleep training.  DD has reflux and has to be held upright for 20-30 minutes after feeding.  She is usually sound asleep by then.  I am not worried about it.  I am just happy when she sleeps.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
