negative pregnancy test, could I still be pregnant?

I know you are not supposed to get discouraged after one month of trying, but it's hard not to. My husband and I tried on all my fertile days, and a couple days before and afterwards. I took a negative pregnancy test 4 days before my missed period with a pregnancy test that claims it can give accurate results 6 days before your missed period. I know there's a slight chance I still could be, is there anyone on this site who has taken a negative pregnancy test when you really were pregnant?

Re: negative pregnancy test, could I still be pregnant?

  • no need to be discouraged I got many negatives before I got a BFP this go round. I feel like I would say weather you are pregnant if it is saying your not there is a large chance you are not.  wait a week and take another test.

  • Well, my first question is always "How did you determine your fertile days?"  Because that'll give insight into whether or not you should actually expect your period in 4 days.  If you were off on those days, that means the date of your period would be off so yes, you could still get a +.

  • I didn't get a + test until 2 days after my missed period.  I know it's frustrating when you don't get pg on the first try, but hang in there.
  • it isnt as important how many days you are before your expected period as how many days past your ovulation you are.

I have a short LP (days post ovulation before period) so testing 6 days before my period would only been 6 days post O for me.

wait and test the day your period is due, I tested 2 days and 1 day before my period and got negatives and then tested the day period was due (11 days post O) and got my BFP!

  • I got a negative test and was still pregnant, I tested too early - must have ovulated late.  That pregnancy ended early, with Olivia I tested myself the day my cycle should have started and got a positive result.

Some women have a hormone that doesn't allow for accurate urine test results and have to get a blood test to determine pregnancy.  My best friend is a nurse, she told me what the hormone was but I don't recall.  If you don't have your period by Monday, ask your GP for a blood test, they are more sensitive than the HPTs anyway.

  • i would test closer to AF; those HPT that claim to get a result 6 days before AF are only about 60% accurate. they state it in small print in their commercials.

    good luck!

  • I got a negative test at 9dpo followed by (several) positive tests at 12 dpo.  Are you charting?  Do you know the day you ovulated?  Those types of numbers are much more meaningful than how many days before you think you expect your period, since ovulating late can lead to a later expected period.

Test again with fmu until you get a positive or your period.

  • I tested this past Friday and got a BFN so I figured AF was around the corner. I have very regular 25 day cycles and was due for AF Saturday. It's now Tuesday and still no AF, very unusual for me! I'm waiting until tomorrow morning to re test. I think I may have tested too early. I'm scared though to re test and get another negative.

I hope I'll be joining you ladies soon!
Best of luck to you OP!

  • You also need to take into consideration when you implanted (if you are pregnant).  This time I implanted at 7 DPO and got a faint positive at 9 DPO, but with my other pregnancies I didn't get a positive until later.  And yes, I have taken negative pregnancy tests before I got a positive (lots of them).

Don't get too discouraged your first month.  We started trying for baby #2 around this time last year, I got pregnant in February, had a miscarriage, and then didn't get pregnant again until October.  So realistically it can take awhile, and this is normal.  I know how frustrating it can be though!

  • I took an early pregnancy test....a ton of them because I am a POAS addict, all were negative until I MISSED my period.  Tested 2 days after missed period and still had a very very faint line....for 3 days a faint line....then all of a sudden a super dark line...and here I am PREGNANT. So it could happen.

  • absolutely, i am pregnant now and had 4 negative tests. but i knew that i was pregnant and kept buying more tests :-). i was told that it takes about 10 days for the embryo to implant in the uterus and after implantation the body produces hcg, which is what the pregnancy tests need for a + result. have faith!! the positive test finally came 1 day before missed period for me.
  • Although I did have a negative before a positive it's also possible that you just aren't pregnant.

Just because you had sex at the right time it doesn't mean you'll get pregnant.

  • check out peeonastick.com it is very informative. also like others said, wait a few days to a week and test again with FMU. gl

This is always good to remember...you can do everything in your power to be in the perfect window and still get a negative. One month of TTC is still early. Even with charting, it took me 9 months for DD. BUT, that being said, it's not over until AF arrives. Good luck to you!

  • Really, you feel discouraged after one month? I mean sure everyone feels disappointed at one time or another, but please if you're feeling discouraged then do yourself a favor now and build some perspective. There's about a 20% chance of getting pregnant for a healthy couple with no problems and the right timing. That means there's an 80% chance of NOT getting pregnant. Accepting this now, will help you through the process. To answer your question - I did get negatives every day before my positive. Good luck to you.

This, plus I will add that is is completely normal for a healthy couple to take up to a YEAR to get pregnant.

That said, I have NEVER had luck taking a hpt before af was due (not that it stopped me from testing early). If you aren't charting, or at the very least using opk's, then you won't really know when you should be testing to begin with. I started ttc 2.5 years before I got pregnant with my DD, so I have poas about a million times. I think a PP mentioned the fine print telling you the accuracy when you test before AF, and it's not very good. Wait a week and test again.

  • First off, it isn't likely to get pregnant on your first shot of trying. I believe the statistic is 20% of healthy couples can? I may be wrong on that, but I know it's on the low end. Were you temping, taking OPKs and watching your CM? If not then you probably weren't able to pinpoint your fertile days as well as you think.

The only way to know for sure if you are accurately testing based on your O date and expected period is to chart. So you may have Oed late, and it hasn't been long enough to tell or your period isn't as close as you expect or you just aren't pregnant.

Until you get AF, it is possible. Wait until you actually miss your period and then test. I tested at  8dpo and 9dpo, both BFN. That was 6 and 7 days before AF... unlikely but I was discouraged still. I waited a day then tested again at 4 days before and got a BFP on both a pink dye and a CBD.

  • Really one month? That makes you sound like a spoiled child. Try years like some women on here. Or having several losses like others. It's not easy to get pregnant. Some people get really lucky on the first try. Most don't. Give it some time.

  • With DS I got 2 false negatives. But I was using a less sensitive digital test at the time.

  • Are you charting? It's entirely possible you O'd later than normal, or it's just still too early for a + test (many people have gotten - tests and then a + later). it's ain't over until a BFP or AF shows! I'd wait a couple days and test again. GL!

  • I tested 2 days before my missed period and got a negative.  Didn't get a positive until the day of my missed period.
