September 2011 Moms

is it just me?

There are a few things I avoid doing with Q because i don't want to be judged by strangers. Its stupid because i generally don't give a shvt when it comes to myself but i guess being judged as a mom is different.

1. I will not go to the liquor store with him. I like to have a bottle of wine with certain meals but I'll wait til H comes home to run out and get it. I can't imagine the liquor store people will judge me for buying a bottle of wine with a one year old but just bringing him in there feels wrong.

2. I won't take him into a convenience store. I don't know why. I feel like people will think I'm buying cigarettes or condoms with a baby on my hip.

3. I make sure he is dressed masculine when I take him out. I all about equality between genders and sexual orientation and all that. I think boys should be allowed to play with dolls, but I'm very self conscious about someone mistaking my son for a girl.

Am I crazy? Does anything else have these issues or issues like these?

I bring is up because i really want a nice bottle of red with dinner tonight but I dunno when H will be home.

Re: is it just me?

  • I won't bring Cody into a liquor store but I will buy beer at the grocery store if he is with me.

And I alway make sure he is dressed like a boy.  Then again he doesn't really have any gender neutral clothes.  They are all stereotypical boy things - dinosaurs, skulls, motorcycles, etc.

  • I won't take her into a liquor store. I don't know why, I guess it just seems wrong. Luckily around here almost every grocery store sells liquor so I just grab a six pack when I'm grocery shopping.

Do you have a liquor store with a drive through?

I try to put a little pink on her whenever we leave the house. Although it never fails, unless she's in a dress or in head to to pink people think she's a boy.

I try not to lose my patience with her in public because I don't want people to think I'm a bad mom. I care way too much what people think about me.

  • I must not care what people think because I do three of these. I have taken DD to the liquor store quite a few times and our liquor store gives a 10% case discount, so I always buy at least a case.

For the most part, DD's cloths are pretty girly. Not really by choice, but just what is available. I actually find it funny when people call her a "he" and then apologize...it is really not that big of a deal.

  • I agree, there are certain places or things I won't do if I have M. Even though H and I aren't really drinkers, we did buy a case of Mikes Hard when we were at the grocery store. I went into the liquor part, and H just stayed with M outside in the grocery part. I wouldn't have done it at all if it was just M and I.

As for someone mistaking children for the opposite sex, it doesn't even bother me anymore. It's mainly the older generation that does it, but I've had M's ears pierced since 2 months old, and I always dress her in pinks and purples (unless she has her Penguins Jersey or Steeler Jersey on) and she still gets mistaken for a boy sometimes. Even when she was younger, I put a bow in her hair! She won't wear one now though. But it drives me nuts.

As for a gas station or convenience store, I don't mind dragging her in with me. Just because I don't buy condoms there, and I've never smoked, so people can't judge me anyway. If they want to, go for it!! lol.

There are several times MIL wants H and I to stop and visit her at her PT job. She bartends at the local "vets" club. She doesn't expect us to bring her into the bar area, as there is a back room for parties and things, but I just refuse. It's still smokey and still a "bar scene" to me. If she wants to see M, she can walk outside for a few minutes.

PA has very strict liquor laws, only state run stores can carry most liquor and wine. Beer is beginning to be available in some grocery stores (maybe wine too, haven't checked in a while) but its in a special part of the store and you can only buy it there so it's pretty much akin to the liquor store.

It's not just you, at least for clothes. I like to make sure that E always looks super cute and girly because I don't like people thinking she is a boy. But it never fails that even when E is in a dress we get asked, how old is he?

HAHA yup same here.  K will be decked out in pink and maybe even have a bow and the little old man at the grocery store will say what a handsome boy!

I've definitely taken J to the liquor store to buy a bottle of wine or case....nbsp; It's not like I am drinking and driving or giving him the wine.nbsp; I'm cool with it.

I take Bo with me! I take him everywhere I go! If I need to get something done I do it! I am an adult who drinks alcohol responsibly and his presence during the purchase of alcohol will not affect him in any way shape or form!
That said, I hate drinking in front of people that know I am nursing. I feel this need to over explain how careful, methodical, and safe I am with alcohol consumption and nursing. Then I feel guilty and cannot enjoy my drink. Sooo if I do drink I have to prepare:pump: my husband has to be there and not drinking and I have to have the home test strips ready. It is usually a huge ordeal just for me to have a drink! See! Here I go again! Over explaining!!!

Haha I think it is funny you will not brig Q into a gas station! Do you buy condoms or cigs alone to where you would buy them with Q? If not, then why would strangers assume the purchase of those two things?

    Silly mommy!

  • PA people - you complain, but I bet you can buy beer on Sunday, right? Blue laws suck.

  • Ditto on the liquor store thing. However, I will buy beer or wine with him at the grocery store.

We avoid eating in nicer sit-down restaurants with D. I used to be one of those people who hated trying to have a nice relaxing dinner with a screaming kid at the table next to us. Not that D is a screamer or badly behaved but I just don't want people to side eye us at all. With him we eat at more kid-friendly places.

That sounds very harsh. I'm glad I don't have to worry about that. We can buy beer anywhere almost! LOL We have drive thru "beer barns" and frozen daquari places with drive thrus where your drink comes in a sealed plastic bag.

Ah, I see. That would be really inconvenient.  I live in Louisiana where there are drive through daquiri places on every corner.  (and they wonder why insurance rates are so high)

  • I am so jealous of you all that have the drive through booze places. Though, I wonder if there is a higher rate of drinking and driving? We can buy beer and wine at the grocery stores, but have to go to the liquor store for the hard stuff. I can't think of the last time I went in one, but I buy beer and wine with J w/o any qualms.

  • None of the things in the OP bother me (granted, I haven't been in a liquor store for almost two years, but I would with her with me).

A is actually not dressed very girly a lot, but like others have said, it seems to be when she's decked out in all pink that I get the boy comments.

  • Meh, I've taken B into Bevmo before for their 5 cent wine sale. (Judge away Empire!) They have carts with the kid seats in the front so it can't be that unusual.  And while I did feel a little weird, I am a responsible adult with a child, that doesn't mean I can't have a glass of wine with dinner.

I also never leave the house with her in PJs, she's always dressed in her cutest stuff when I know we are going out to see people.

Oh I don't go to the bathroom in public places.  I can't fathom managing that with her so I just hold it - it has gotten veeerrrry uncomfortable a few times!

  • I always dress Owen masculine, plaid shirts, jeans and sneakers, lots of dark colors, he always looks like a little man. just about every time we go into public now, some older person calls him a she! I think its the long hair...its getting pretty annoying.
