NBR-rental office help-sorry long repost from dec 11

I know you ladies will give me honest advice:)

On Sunday I went to take a shower and noticed the hot water wasn't getting hot and I noticed the pilot wasn't lit so I called the after hours line and they came over to check it out. Well come to find out our hot water tank was cracked:() We had to wait until morning  (Monday) for Waterworks to come and replace it. Okay fine, I thought it would be fixed by time I got home at about 6pm. Apparently not because when I got home I had NO water tank and no one was there fixing it. So I called the rental office and they advised it would be fixed within 20 mins...well an hour or so went by and they finally came and it was about 8pm.

At this point I am really umcomfortable because #1 its 8pm and dark outside #2 There are two men I have never met #3 I am home alone with DD.

I had to come to the relaization that it had to be done so I let them in the laundry room and sat on the couch with DD where I could see everything going on. They finally finished up about 9pm, I thanked them and they left. Before they left they told me it would be an hour before the water would be hot which I knew. About 20mins later the water was warm enough for DD to have a bath...I got her finished up and she is drinking her bottle while I flip through my email.

10pm DD is falling asleep and I hear my door bell ring, I thought "who could this be this late?" I look out the peep hole and its one of the Men from Waterworks...Now I am totally uncomfortable at this point so I ask through the door "How can I help you" His reponse "maam I think I left my hoodie in there" Hoodie?? Why would he be wearing a hoodie? So I told him let me check for you, btw I am holding DD also...So I go set her in her walker, I check the laundry room for this "hoodie" and I don't see anything...I grabbed a steak knife out of the kitchen because I have this weird feeling and my hands are shaky. I go back to the door and say "I don't see a hoodie" His reponse "Do you mind if I come in and take a look myself?" I told him Yes I do mind...He stands there rattling his keys and rubbing his hands together for about 30 secs then walks away. I go to the window to peep out the blind and he is standing in the parking lot. ( I am calling Dh at this point) then he runs to his truck and pulls out really fast.

Omg...Dh gets home about 20mins later and I tell him everything

I called my rental office today and reported it. I told them not to send anyone to my home without talking to me first and that I didn't want any work completed after business hours. The property manager agreed.

20 mins later...I get a phone call from my rental office but I couldn't answer, literally 2mins I call them back and one of the guys that works there tells me the city is at my house to inspect my water heater. Wth I just told them not to let anyone in without "talking" to me first.

Please forgive me ladies I am all over the place. Please help me think clearly here, am I crazy? Overthinking this? WWYD? Thanks for reading

Well I'm glad you used your instincts and didn't let him back in!  I would have gotten the information on what company he was from and reported it to them and maybe even the police.

I wouldn't freak too much about the town coming to check your water heater and them giving you short notice.  You had just called and discussed the incident and they probably didn't realize they were coming.  I'd let it slide this time, but if it happened again, I would call and refuse to let anyone in your home without someone from the rental office "chaperoning" them as well.

I agree with all of this.

Also, I would call your rental office again and ask for the info for the people who did the repairs, then call and report then to their company and possibly the police if you want to take it that far.

I'm sorry that happened to you.  How scary!  Glad you and your DD are ok! 

I am going to stop by there today. I feel like the property manager tried to make it seem like "Oh maybe he did think he forgot his hoodie" which could be true but I still feel uncomfortable and honestly I think the whole situation was totally unprofessional!
