"word explosion?" When?

My daughter just turned 2 and the week before I would say she had a semi word explosion- started saying a lot of 2 word sentences and new words.  But now it seems like not much is new and we are just waiting for her to put more words together. 

when did your toddler have the "word explosion" we hear of?

It depends on the kid. Tim is speech delayed so it wasn't until 2.5 when he really started adding words to his vocabulary and not until recently did he start using 2-3 words a time.

With both my kids they barely said maybe 4-5 words prior to being 18 months old (however, they were very active- crawled, walked early etc.).  My oldest just progressed from there.  However, my youngest (which is 16 months younger then our oldest) although she had a "word explosion" at 18 months still didn't have a lot of words to say at 2 years old but I just figured a lot of that was because she had an older sibling and by 2 1/2 years old it had all worked itself out.  Now she's a very vocal little girl.

My DD had one around 18 months when she started saying two word sentences and then again sometime between there because now she mostly talks in complete sentences and is adding new words daily. She has always been very vocal though.

DD1 had her first around 15 months, right after getting her ear tubes in. She had 40 words as of her 15 month appt. She had another explosion around 20ish months and has just kept going. Now at 2.5 she carries on full conversations. Her pedi likes to remind me that she's ahead in the language department, and not to expect the same from DD2 (who has 4 or 5 words right now at 13 months).

DD had one around 18 mo but once she started school around 26 months she definitely started talking more. I would say again right around her 3rd birthday she started using complex sentences and now we can hold whole conversations.

For Ds it was at 23 months, the week before we had a speech eval  scheduled bc he hadn't gone past the ten words he had at 18 months... If LO is putting together the two word sntences and has a decent number of words, I would not worry too much. GL
