I have a paper eater : /

My DD is literally Obsessed with eating paper. If she spots paper the she can get her hands on she will go straight for it and its goes right in her mouth. She will bite off a piece and then spit it out. She will open her mouth for me when I tell her to spit it out but its has gotten quite annoying. If there's a sticker on a toy she will take full advantage of her to little bottom teeth and chew it off. She'll take clothes out of the shopping cart and start going to town on the tags!  She'll find a way to climb up the fridge and take papers off! And books.. OMG! she will literally eat chunks out of books in 2.5 seconds. Needless to say her books are on a high shelf now.Its gotten to the point  where I can only paper proof the house so much and if she ends up eating some then so be it..

Any of you LO's eating paper ? Its just a phase right? Should I worry about any paper she does actually consume ?

  • I have no answer for you except to say that mine is exactly the same way. His oral obsession extends to everything else too. No matter how small the item, he will find it and put it in his mouth immediately. Mine unfortunately won't open his mouth on command, and he's managed to eat a little paper every now and then. I can't imagine it's a problem.....

  • Yeah DS does this, he already tried eating a coffee fliter! Ugh, it drives me crazy... I think it's just a phase right now cause of their teeth and needing to put almost everything that doesn't belong in their mouth in it.

  • Yup, same here.  I'm pretty easygoing about letting DS get into things and tear the house apart (as long as its nothing dangerous, obviously).  But this morning he was opening up our kitchens drawers and found a pile of paper napkins.  Nom nom nom.

I also joke that Touch & Feel books are "Touch, Feel, and Lick" books.  We have some slobbery faux bunny fur now.

  • Our daughter found the note pad that is on the bottom part of the fridge. She got one piece off and I took it out of her mouth but by then she already knew she could grab another. Newspaper ads and magazines are not safe at our house!
  • DS loves to shred and eat tissues. It's a phase. He also loves crumbs, leaves, and dust bunnies. Basically anything bite-size.

It's just a phase. Gross and annoying but totally normal. I don't worry too much about it. I do try to keep these things out of his reach, and I take them away when I find him messing with them, but I don't go overboard with it as long as he's eating and pooping normally.

Too much paper (or fuzz, if you have a dustball eater) can cause a bowel obstruction, but it takes quite a bit. I'd honestly be more worried about choking than GI blockage.
