Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Peanut Butter?

When did you introduce your LO to peanut butter? DD is almost 11 months old and I'm getting bored with her meals I'd love to introduce some new ones and thought of pb toast? Or even pb j although I know there's quit a bit of sugar in jelly. We have no food allergies in either side of the family. Would you introduce it now or wait? Pedi rec no eggs or honey until 1yr, but didn't specify anything else to stay away from. TIA!!

Re: Peanut Butter?

  • I say give it a try, but not on toast right away... also, maybe use real fruit smashed instead of jam, I did that for my SD and she loved it!

  • With DD1 we introduce it at 1 year.  We did a really thin layer on toast and cut it into tiny bite sized pieces.  I was more worried about the choking hazard than I was about allergies, we also have no family history.

  • We started a little before 9 months I think. Pedi was fine with anything, the only food she said was off limits was honey and raw fish/sushi.

I do a thin layer of all-natural peanut butter (no salt or sugar or oil added) on toast with jam - I buy no sugar added jam from Trader Joe's. I was also more worried about the sticky factor and pb being a choking hazard so I always do more jam than pb. DD loves it!

  • We do a thin layer on toast that I break up into pieces for Ds. He loves it.

  • We introduced pb to DS a few months ago, on accident.  DH shared some of his "one ingredient" ice cream with DS.  He didn't realize that I always take DS's portion out before I add a little peanut butter for the rest of us (it gets rid of the nasty banana after taste).  He had been sharing with him for quite some time before I caught him.

  • Both of my kids get it as one of their breakfast options within the first week of solids for sure, so 6 months.  My kids do BLW so toast with butter and peanut butter end up as a breakfast option frequently.

  • DH gave DS some bites of Nutter Butter at 9 mo "without thinking." Hmm So I've just continued to give it to him, and the pedi approves.

  • I let her lick some off my finger right around 10 months, she loved it!  I haven't given her much beyond that though, only because most of her meals happen at daycare and it's nut-free.

  • I introduced it a couple of weeks ago.  The only reason I wait so long is because peanut butter is a hard texture for babies to adjust too because of it's stickyness.  I spread it thin on toast so that it's not too sticky and she can swallow it easy.

  • Wellll around July I was changing DD's diaper right after we got home from camp and found an entire peanut halve in her diaper!! I flipped my lid, I still think FI's stepdad fed it to her although he claim innocence but he's the only one that would have and I know she didn't pick it up off the floor. So we found out that she wasn't allergic at least lol. She was around 7 months then.

She's already had PBJ a few times since and has been fine, no allergies on either side of the family plus I personally believe waiting to introduce foods will cause allergies.

You can feed eggs, as long as there are no allergies, at 6 months but they suggest only feeding them the yolks because the whites are the allergen part. Honey is a definite no though because of the bacteria.

  • I introduced it to DS at 10.5 months.  He loves it.  We have no history of allergies, so I wasn't too worried.  Honestly, the best thing is being able to feed him flatbread and peanut butter for dinner on crazy nights.  I feel likes its still somewhat healthy and I know he'll eat it.

  • I may try now too. LO is turns one in less than two weeks :O I heard to put a little on their back to see if a rash occurs before giving to them. ? Not sure if that helps decide about an allergy or not.

  • LO had whole eggs and peanut butter at 7 months. She had everything including shellfish (besides honey) by 9 months.
  • We introduced peanut butter a couple days after his first birthday.

  • I tried pb a little after we started solid food.  We noticed a diaper rash after that so we tried it again and again another rash, so we are thinking she has an allergy.  And there is no history of any allergies in the family.   So just take caution when you do give it.
