No cervix check? 33 week update w/ twins

We had our appointment today at 33w2d. Baby A's head is so low they can't get a measurement but they are estimating that he weights 4lb9oz. Baby B is estimated to weigh approx. 4lb15oz.

My doctor said that because I've been having frequent contractions, he didn't think it was a good idea to do a cervix check. Apparently, he said it could "stir things up" and get them moving even more which we obviously don't want because we still have some time to go. Has anyone been in this boat?

Re: No cervix check? 33 week update w/ twins

  • My docs felt the same way. I had one early on and then again a week before I delivered. The last was my choice. I wanted to know what was going on down there.

  • Since the start of my second trimester, my Perinatologist started doing measurements by TVUS only. She says that once I'm into the third trimester, they will probably just do an abdominal US check to see if length looks good, and will only go internal if something looks out of place/short/open.

  • My OB never checked my cervix. Too much risk of infection and/or irritation.

  • Mine did my first and only check at 34w1d and that was possibly because my babies were growing 3 weeks behind so he wanted to see where I was and whether it would be a c/s or induction the following week. I ended up having an emergency c/s on the Sunday before my scheduled induction.

  • I've never heard of a t/v u/s causing or triggering contractions. I had numerous cervical checks (both manual and by t/v u/s) because I've had so many contractions since 15w. The u/s never irritated anything. I had my last t/v u/s cervical check at 32 weeks with my MFM (they stopped checking it after that). My OB started weekly manual checks at 35 weeks.

  • Today they told me (at the mfm) that they do an.initial tvus and after that abdominal ones unless something has changed or they can't get a good view. Weird how they all have different procedures.
  • My MFM stops doing cervical checks at 32 weeks.  They said that after that, the cervix will naturally start to shorten, so there wasn't much point i continuing to check.  I haven't heard anything about a cervix check "stirring things up", but then again, I feel like I'm learning new things everyday with twins!

  • My MFM stops doing them at 32 weeks... I had my last one at 29 weeks and won't have anymore.
