Should We Buy A Swing Now?

We don't have a swing, registered for one didn't get it, thought it was pretty pricey so we waited to see if we needed it. Well, I spent half of my day swinging a car seat back and forth for fussy baby. She clearly loved it. Do you think it's worth purchasing at this point, if your a STM, how long did your LO use it for?

Re: Should We Buy A Swing Now?

  • We held out too and got a used one last week. So.worth.it. I probably wouldn't buy new bc they are so expensive, but it was definitely worth the half price price tag we paid for it. People we got it from said their daughter used it from 2 months, when they got it, to 6 months, when they sold it to us bc they're moving cross country.

  • If you want to avoid the high closet buy used and a travel swing. We use our swing every day often same as we had with Dax. We used it til he was almost six months.

  • I originally didn't think I would need one but I did! I bought one used off Craig's list for cheap and it's been a life saver. Some babies just need movement and I need to have my hands free for a little bit so I don't go crazy. I would say try to find one used that's in good condition, oh and mine plugs in which I think is important so I don't have to worry about batteries but can use batteries just in case. Good luck

  • The swing has been awesome. I got ours at a consignment event for way cheaper than retail price. Definitely worth it.

  • In case your kid is like mine... she LOVES and sometimes demands to be swung vigorously in the car seat, but her swing is acceptable for maybe 5 minutes at a time if she's in a good mood. It's a small travel type swing so it's probably just not as vigorous as the big ones that we could never afford.

  • Ours is a lifesaver. Bought it off a friend for way less than original cost though.

Fair warning, if your LO is a mover like ours is...sometimes the swing just isn't good enough anymore; we still have to swing her, bounce her, sway her, usually all of those simultaneously.

  • We were in the exact same situation as you after having our first. About 3 weeks in we borrowed one from a friend, and ultimately ended up pulling the trigger on the expensive one we had been eyeing. We used it almost everyday until he was about 6 months old so we absolutely got our money's worth. It's a must have in our house.

  • All of my coworkers chipped in and bought our swing when I was pregnant with my first. DD1 loved the swing until about four months. DD2 is in it even more. I have no idea what we'd do without it!

  • We had one for our first LO and hardly used it.  Now this little guy I believe he likes the swing cause Daycare lady has one and she says he loves it.  But I just hate the space it takes up.... I mean along with exersaucer, jumparoos, etc, too much stuff!

I think they outgrow them quickly so I suggest going to a consignment/thrift store or craigslist.

  • The one we got off Craigslist started taking a dump on us so after some debating I ended up getting one that doubles as a vibrating chair that is removable.  Greatest buy ever so far.  It was pricey but I didn't want to take the chance on another used one crapping on us.
