Blended Families

need opinions.

this has been bothering me and I just want to know what others think.

we have a 3 month old 4 year old and a 5year old.

the other day we went costume shopping at Kmart and while.climbing the cart to put a costume in, the 4 year old tipped the cart and.knocked the carseat with the baby in off the cart, thankfully my boyfriend caught her before hitting the ground.

now I understand that it was an accident but sshe was scolded, cried and apologized.

but what bothers me is that after all of that, she kept trying to climb the cart about 5 more times before we left. being scolded each time and reminded what had happened before.... normal or no?

Re: need opinions.

  • yes, this is normal. had it been me, i wouldnt put an infant in their carseat on the cart where they could fall. I would have held her or put the whole seat inside the cart where the groceries go. it is not safe on the top of the cart. it is not secure.

  • Honestly. I've never seen a baby not on top?

Ditto this. The carts are not designed to hold an infant seat, it's a huge safety no-no...

  • Normal. At age 5 it's hard for them to concentrait and stand still for long periods of time.

A lot of people put the car seats on top because they think the car seat will latch in like it does on the car but it doesn't. Another reason is because they can look at baby while in the cart. I used to see it a lot a couple of years ago now I see mainly the car seat in the cart where the groceries go, I only see car seat on top every now and then.

  • Normal. And VERY dangerous to have a car seat on the cart, I assume you mean attached to the from on top. Just because people do it does not make it safe, please take this as a lesson learned.

Like I said, just because others do it does not make it safe.

And this article specifically talks about what happen in your situation.

  • Op I agree w what others said about having the baby on top of the cart. When dd8 was a baby, I always did that. Now with the new LO, I tried to do it and the bucket seat did not fit right on the cart like it used to 8 yrs ago. I did some research and it turned out that over the past 8 yrs the shopping cart manufacturers actually redesigned the top part of the carts so that bucket seats will not fit in as well anymore. They did this because there had been so many accidents and injuries with tipping carts. People still do it because they don't know any better, but it's not safe.

So back to your question, the 4 yr old was acting normal just keep the baby out of the cart.

This. While at the store either baby-wear with baby in a sling/carrier, or put the car seat in the cart.

  • Normal.

I still see a lot of infant seats in the top part of a cart, but I see even more down in the bottom lately. It's just not super safe because of the exact situation you described.
