This morning I started reading time with my babies. My MIL gave us a copy of The Tale of Benjamin Bunny by Beatrix Potter, and I have never read it, but I was excited to read it to my son (since his name is Ben).
Everything was going along fine until the end of the book when Little Benjamin's daddy bunny came into the picture. He was smoking a pipe of "bunny tobacco" and carrying a "little switch" which he proceeded to use to spank Little Benjamin!! Yikes! LOL
Now don't get me wrong, I feel that classic literature is very important, and it makes me sad to see it being left out of so many school cirriculums. I'll still read the book to him from time to time, but I just was like as I was reading it. It wasn't exactly the heartwarming story I was expecting, especially for the first book I read to my son.
What books are you reading to your LOs?
Re: Errr...Beatrix Potter
Kids books! My favorite topic!
We had a similar incident at a school I worked at. We invited members of the community to come and read a favorite story, but one of the chosen books was from about 50 years ago and blatently racist. We were mortified!
My favorites to read to my daughter are:
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Kisses Kisses Baby-O (with lots of kisses and cuddles while reading!)
The Very Cranky Bear
The Runaway Bunny
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
Llama Llama Nighty Night and Llama Llama Wakey Wake
I Spy Little Toys
The Barnyard Dance
Monkey and Me
On the Night You Were Born
These are all board books and I also have a few Taggies cloth books that she likes to hold and play with.
I have a lot of other favorites for toddlers and kindergarten too...
I don't know if there are book clubs in the states or not. We've got one from Scholastic here in Canada. You can get books really cheap if you order through them. (like 1/2 price for most) Most teachers here have an account that you can order through. I ordered most of hers last year while I was teaching Kindergarten.
Oh! Don't forget non-fiction books too! I like the National Geographic Kids Look and Learn series and Owen and Mzee (about a tortoise and hippo that became friends after the Tsunami a few years back) They are great because they are photographs.
Sometimes I read to her from my university textbook while I am studying too
I figure as long as it's cuddling and hearing my voice at this point, right?!?
But Sandra Boynton books are my favorite to read out loud to my babies.
Ours too! We inherited a ton from when my baby brother was little. They're adorable and DD loves them.
I'm loving all these ideas! I think I will start an Amazon book wish list. Quite a few of my in-laws are teachers, so they love to give the babies books. My mom is getting them a bookshelf for their nursery for Christmas.
to- notallisison
Lol! It looks like the baby on the left is flipping us off! I just glanced and saw that!
I assumed it was in reference to the drama a little while back...
dr suess!
they are kinda long but the illustrations really hold LO's attention! plus they are fun to read! we have a ton on DD's amazon christmas list!
It is and it isn't. The babies are mine and my daughter had quite the attitude when she was born. That picture was a VERY lucky shot when they were a couple weeks old.
Aw, I like the classics, and will probably read Benjamin Bunny to our baby when he's old enough... but I agree that's a bit much for his first "being-read-to" experience.
I've been reading to our baby since he was in the NICU, and by now he really enjoys it and even turns the pages (albeit sometimes in the wrong direction!
). We like:
The Poky Little Puppy (a classic "Golden Book"... the only thing "wrong" with it is that it has the puppies eating chocolate custard... dogs shouldn't eat chocolate!)
Guess How Much I Love You
God Gave Us You (we're a Christian family so we like this one)
Peter Rabbit (although it has a reference to Peter's father being caught and eaten)
Hide and Seek Bear
A Picnic with Monet (illustrated with artwork by the painter Monet, with adorable baby-friendly rhymes that tell a story to tie them together... there's a whole series of these but the Monet one is my favorite)
When the World is Ready for Bed (LOOOOVE this one; it's now our routine "bedtime story" book, and Jack loves the illustrations)
Thank You, God, for Loving Me (another Christian/God-focused one that is nice for bedtime)
Touch & Feel books (we have the pets one and the farm one... Jack LOVES feeling the different animals)
Fuzzy Bee: this is a huge hit with Jack because it's a crinkly cloth book and has cute 3-D bugs on every page (e.g., a ladybug, dragonfly, etc.). It has simple rhyming text that is great for babies, and since it's a cloth book, it's good for them to play with (and chew -- if you wash it first!). We have another crinkly cloth book, "Where's My Belly Button" or something like that.
I'd like to get some more Sandra Boynton books; so far we just have Moo, Baa, La La La, which hasn't seemed to impress Jack at this point. I also feel like I get through the book in about three seconds.
