Another Ergo ?

When you wear your baby in the Ergo (mine is 7 weeks old), does he/she end up laying on your chest? I'm afraid she is going to suffocate or that I'm wearing her wrong. And, her feet won't stay in anymore, she spreads them out. Is that okay? TIA!

Re: Another Ergo ?

  • I am by no means a baby wearing expert-- but I just wanted to let you know the I wore my little one his legs out from about 5 weeks on. . . he wouldn't tolerate the froggy-legs-in position.  I still used the pillow insert until he was 4 monthish old, but let him be legs out since it was obviously what he wanted.

  • We have the insert. Kyden is 2 weeks old. Here are some pictures

You can see those awesome momma boobs that she is resting her little chin on

she was the same way in the photo, except her arm was underneath her chin and resting on my chest.

  • Are you using the insert or no?  How big is she?

You want the carrier to hold her like you do in arms - so snuggly against your body in an upright position.  She shouldn't slump.  The insert is designed to make the carrier fit more snuggly on a small newborn to prevent slumping.  If she's on the bigger side, you probably don't need the insert.

One of the downsides to the ergo is that many babies won't tolerate the feet in position for long but aren't yet big enough to sit in the carrier with legs out.  This sounds like where you are!

I would take a small blanket and fold it and let her sit on that.  This will keep her in the sit squat position with support to her knees and her knees a bit higher than her bum but won't overspread her legs - she should be able to kick her legs at the knee.  It will also boost her up so she isn't swallowed by the carrier - the top of the carrier should come no higher than the midline of her ear.

If you try without the insert and letting her put her legs out and she's slumping or seems loose then you still need the insert.  There's a bit of an awkward stage for the ergo between now and about 4-5 months depending on her size but you can make it work.

    HTH!

  • I am using the insert, but I feellike she is slumping forward. It is definitely not snug and I don't know how to make it more snug!
