Babies: 0 - 3 Months

labia adhesion

hey everyone-- so my doctor said my DD has a labia adhesion- after a little research I found out its a thin layer of skin growing over her vaginal area-- my doctor prescribed her Premarin cream (estrogen cream used for menopause).

I don't feel comfortable using this cream on her- I said that to her doctor and she just went into a lengthy tale about how it is normal and happens a lot to babies born early.

I read you can use A&D or whatever diaper rash cream you use on the area to keep it moist and I won't have to use the Premarin cream.

When I went to fill the prescription for the Premarin cream the pharmacist looked at me strange and asked what it was for-- I said my 10 week old daughter-- she asked if she could call my doctor to verify that is what she wanted.. so I am nervous to use it.

Has anyone had any experience with this?

Let me know- PLEASE!

Thank you!

Re: labia adhesion

  • DD was diagnosed with a labial adhesion at her 6mo appointment.  We were prescribed Premarin and told once the adhesion is back open to use A&D or something similar to keep it open.  We were told the diaper cream would NOT open the adhesion, but would help keep it from happening again once we got it open.  Our ped said that if not treated an adhesion can actually continue getting worse and cause UTIs, not allowing urine out and eventually it's possible to get bad enough to require surgery to correct.  She said it was very common and would/could keep happening until DD starts producing her own estrogen.

You use a VERY small amount of cream, so I wasn't really concerned about using it.  Our pharmacist knew it was for DD and just repeated that we should only use a small amount, they see it prescribed for this use and were not concerned.  The first time it took 10-days using the cream to completely open back up.  We've had to use it two other times since (when it started readhering).  FWIW, A&D didn't work for us, we've had to use Aquaphor during diaper changes.  I use the Premarin once a day when needed (to open an adhesion) and Aquaphor during one or two diaper changes a day.

  • yes- she told me twice a day for a week.

the adhesion is small and starts more towards her anus.

she's peeing fine. I guess I will use it once a day and see what happens. but I hate the side effects on there!

  • We were told that because you're using so little we probably wouldn't see any side effects.

  • okay-- thank you so much!

  • Both of my daughters have it.  They're 4 & 2 now with no issues.  I used Premarin briefly on my first when it was first discovered and I did notice side effects; a little peach fuzz on her labia so I stopped using it.  The fuzz went away, but I just didn't want to keep using it. Plus, it was irritating her (even with the very small amount used) that it just wasn't something I wanted to continue doing. And it only fixed it temporarily, so not worth it to me. I've spoken in length to 3 different pedis about it and they all say it normally clears itself up over time.  Luckily, they have never had issues because of it.
