Skin reaction to dairy?

I am pretty sure my daughter is MSPI. I have also eliminated eggs and have seen a difference, but she is still having mucousy poop and trouble gaining weight. Tonight MH had pizza and then played with her while she was just wearing a diaper. Her back broke out into hives. I am kind of freaking out. It was her bed time and she was fussy so I put her to bed, but now I am worried. What if she has trouble breathing? If she was going to have a more serious reaction, would it have happened by now?

Re: Skin reaction to dairy?

  • Sounds like she's allergic to dairy. DD1 gets hives if dairy touches her skin or if we touch dairy and then touch her. Let your pedi know what happened. You should have LO tested by a pediatric allergist. We have to carry an EpiPen for DD1 because of her allergies.

If she was going to have an ana reaction, it probably would've happened pretty quickly. But unfortunately, just because the first reaction wasn't severe, the next one could be, you just never know. That's why it's important to inform your pedi and get guidance as far as keeping Benadryl on hand, what dose to give, what signs to look for for a severe reaction, etc.

In the meant time, obviously you want to wash your hands well if you handle dairy products, and wipe down counters where you prep with dairy ingredients. If you are out with friends and they eat pizza or drink a milkshake, etc., ask them to wash their hands before touching your DD.

Also, if she's exposed again, wipe her skin off with at least a wet cloth, or a wet ones type hand wipe.

  • DS#3 is allergic to dairy and has contact reactions.  I agree with the pp that hand washing is key.  Everyone in my house washes their hands before and after we eat, we have to keep track of utensils to make sure one used to cut cow's milk cheese isn't then used to cut DS's meat, for an example.
