Tummy Time?

I was curious as I'm a FTM is it safe to start tummy time now? I know according to my boppy you can use it for tummy time starting at 2 months, but my LO is only three weeks, so should I start doing a few minutes a day of tummy time or should I wait? I'm curious as my pediatrician hasn't said anything to us and I meant to ask, but forgot to the last time I was in.

Re: Tummy Time?

  • As long as the cord stump has come off completely you can absolutley start tummy time :)

If it hasn't you can always start have having LO lay on your chest, this is a form of tummy time as it helps strengthen their neck muscles.

We did a combination of both to start with, and although DS hates tummy time still he has really good control of his head and neck.

They recommend 20 minutes of tummy time a day, but it's def. easier to split that up into 3-5 minute intervals as our LO's tend to not be so happy during it!

  • We never really did "official" tummy time with DS, just laid on the couch with him on our chests so he could push up, lift his head, etc.  Right now, we're doing the same with DD.  As long as they're getting time during the day to practice holding up their head & strengthen their necks, you're in good shape.  :)

  • yep! go ahead and start! i just lay my darling girl down on a clean blanket on the floor. at first, she mostly just seemed to be licking the blanket, but she is really starting to develop muscles and coordination. she pushes up with her legs and lifts her head a lot!

  • I started propping LO up on the boppy about 4 weeks old for tummy time. She does way better than just flat on floor. Flat on floor she would jsut instantly fuss. Now she will do about 5-10 min if propped on boppy and I have colorful toys for her to look at

  • I read somewhere to start tummy time right away so we did at about 4 days old...I hope that was the right advice but LO is doing great with it!

  • I was told by the nurses at the hospital that you can start right away. I started either 4 or 5 days after birth for a little bit at a time and she has done great. She is strong and can almost lift her self up with her arms.

  • We didn't even wait for the cord stump to fall off...just made sure his diaper was covering it and let him go. My pediatrician said to start right away. I usually just put him on the floor on a blanket, sometimes on his playmat. You can do tummy time with your baby on your chest too. It definitely has helped DS...he is so much stronger than other babies his age that I know!

  • Start tummy time but don't use the boppy til she's older and can lift head more. Initially LO will only lift head a few inches off ground so not enough for boppy. But quickly she'll lift it enough to look forward and that's more the time for the boppy.
