Weaning to whole milk, new feeding schedule?

Posted this over in 9-12 months but didn't get any response.

DD is almost one and has been EBF her entire life. Of course she eats table food but she has never had formula or even taken a bottle very much. I'm planning on weaning her at a year and switching her to whole milk. Right now I do (more or less) scheduled feeding when she wakes up, mid afternoon, and before bed. My question is do I continue to give her milk at the same times or do I just let her tell me when she wants it? When does milk become more of a snack than a necessary part of the day?

  • At a year I just went to a cup of milk with meals.  She got water the rest of the day and with her morning and afternoon snack.

  • We're not EBf anymore, but I think it's a similar transition in some ways. We were told to just switch out the sippy of formula to WCM for her 3 meals a day and h20 or diluted juice we do it for belly trouble prevention! for snacks. If you still nurse on demand I'm not sure how you would wean unless you went to a schedule? sorry on phone and don't remember what you said in your post about on demand vs sched I think at 1 yr it's still a very necessary part of their diet, it just is no longer considered the main source of all nutrients.

ETA: saw you said you feed on a schedule I would definitely offer milk when she normally gets it, especially since its only 3ish times a day. I'd check with the pedi too and make sure you're doing it how they rec :

  • Our Pedi said when we switch to milk to give it with meals (and no more than 18oz per day) and water throughout the day.

  • At age 1, the bulk of calories and nutrition begin to come from food. Milk can be give at every meal, and is not where the bulk of calories and nutrition come from, like formula/BM was.
