Preemies

Do preemies know when they are full?

So we all heard it - preemies don't know when they are hungry - this is why we have to wake them up to feed them. So, do preemies know when they are full?

My LO is about 2 weeks shy from what is original due date was .... and he has been out in the world for about a month now - and I keep uping his intake by 5 mL every day because he is always finishing his bottle and after some feedings - still even seems hungry for more. I don't want to make him sick. What is the best way to figure this one out?

  • I'm not sure that there is an exact answer for this one. My lo will push the bottle away or turn her head and refuse to open her mouth for it again when she is full. She's been doing that since she was in the nicu moved to being feed what she wanted as long as it was min 60ml max 75ml. I believe she was around 37 wks gestational age at that point around 1 month actual. Hopefully that info helps!

  • When my LO is full he pushes the bottle out of his mouth with his tongue. I've never heard preemies don't know they're hungry. The nicu nurses always told me he always woke up screaming and demanding food when it was time to eat.
