Thrush at Daycare

My daycare called today saying that DD had thrush.  And that all 4 kids in her class had it.  We called the pedi and he said that thrush isn't contagious but there is conflicting information on Dr. Google it seems. At first, the daycare said that if we will get the drops from the pedi and bring them up, she could stay.  However, a few minutes later when they found out all of the other toddlers were getting picked up, they wanted her going home.

DD has been sick a lot since starting daycare and wasn't sick even once prior to it so this has been overwhelming.  But I know it is to be expected.  She's had one dose of the drops and I guess was cured because she doesn't have it anymore.  She was at the doctor yesterday for one year check up and the doctor didn't see any thrush.  What do you guys think about this?

Re: Thrush at Daycare

  • I thought thrush was contagious because when you're bfing your boobs and baby's mouth can transfer it back and forth. As for DC, it's a germy place. Ds seems like he is always getting something from there. If the dr didn't see anything I'm sure she's fine and I would just continue to give her the meds as long as your dr directed (I'm not use if it's a one time application or not).

  • It is contagious like that I think.  From what I've read, if the kids were playing in each other's mouths and touch it and then put their hands in their mouths, it can be spread.  I don't know.

  • Why does your DCP think your DD has it, because other kids do? It seems weird that they told you she had it, but your doctor didn't see any and she seems fine now... anyway, this is my experience with thrush. B had thrush so many times when he was a newborn, it was horrible and I knew right away if he had it because I could see the spots in his mouth and he gave it to me every single time! He wouldn't want to eat because it hurt so much and it took days to clear up (7 days + every time). In my experience if she really did have thrush it wouldn't clear up after just one dose.

  • From what I read it wasn't contagious in a sense that it cannot be passed like the flu or a virus. But it seems odd they all got it all the same time.

  • I'm wondering if they ate something that coated their mouths and made their tongues look white. I think thrush is actually quite painful for infants, so I'm pretty sure it was a mistake.

And I'm not 100% certain, but I consider C. albicans (the yeast that causes thrush) to be more of an opportunist. We're all colonized with it, and it doesn't overgrow unless there's some kind of disturbance of the typical situation (depressed immune system, stress, etc). I know you can contract it from nursing, but that's an atypical situation involving prolonged and frequent exposure. All in all, I'd say its extremely unlikely that all the kids at the daycare got thrush from one another.
