Babies: 0 - 3 Months

I am at a loss feeding related.

I am feeling so defeated. A few weeks ago Luke started getting fussy and upset about 10 minutes into a nursing session, but it was only happening every now and then so I wasn't too worried about it. Fast forward to this week and it has escalated to all out crying at almost every feeding. Here are the symtoms:

Bobbing on and off the breast.
Eventually pulling off and all out screaming.
Rooting as if he is still hungry but refusing to relatch.
All of this never happens at the beginning of a feeding; it's always about 10 minutes in.
All of this continues even after burping.
We have had something similar happen even when bottle feeding him, but only every now and then.
Problem is much worse during the day; night feedings are pretty much drama free.

Here is what we have tried so far, without success:
Different nursing positions, including nursing uphill thinking it was over active letdown
More frequent burping.
Block feeding thinking it was an oversupply issue
Simply ending the nursing session thinking he was just full, but before this started happening he would just fall asleep contentedly when finished

Any thoughts on what this could be??? What could be causing him distress after 10 minutes? We go to the pedi Monday but there are lots of feedings between now and then! Nothing is worse than knowing my baby is hungry but refusing to eat!

  • Is there any chance your not making enough milk and he gets mad that your empty before he's full?

  • I don't think it's an under supply issue because it has happened even when I've been engorged, but I could be wrong!

  • Reflux or Gas.
  • Sounds a lot like my reflux baby.
  • DS started acting like that when he started sleeping longer at night.  I assume he was trying to make up for the missed feeding and yet my body wasn't producing enough to satisfy him.  There were times when he'd take an additional 3-4oz from a bottle after he had eaten from both breasts.  Things improved as my body adjusted to DS's "new schedule."

  • Maybe before he gets to the point of fussing try taking him off and getting a good burp in.

This. My DD did this too (including doing really eating well at night), and it was so upsetting to know that she was hungry but wouldn't eat. I didn't think it was reflux at first because she rarely spits up and she likes being flat on her back, but we finally started her on Zantac and she's been doing really well on that.

Good luck - it's so hard when they won't eat!

  • :hugs: it doesn't sound like a supply issue at all...next time he screams take your breast and see if you can "shoot" milk out of your nipple.  If you can and at a steady stream then it's prob bc of overactive letdown.  If so, in addition to what you mentioned you can "shoot" your milk into a towel until the flow slows down/stops coming out.  If that is the problem it will get better as your LO gets older.  Please KUP.

  • Sounds like reflux to me. I would mention it to your pedi and see if you can get your baby on some medications to help with the pain.

do you pump at all??  maybe that way you could tell how much you are producing?

could you have oversupply?  i needed to pump before i fed him to slow the flow for him to eat.  if i just tried to feed him, he would basically drown from the flow and then refuse to eat.

ds also has reflux and is on zantac.

~after 34 cycles we finally got our 2nd little bundle of joy~
