Those who had c-sections

Is there anyone on here that had a c-section and is currently pregnant? Or someone that already has two and had c-sections with both? Or a c-section and then a VBAC?

I am curious if your doctor told you to wait a certain amount of time after your c-section before TTC?

I am scheduled to see my OB in December and was going to see if she was going to say I had to wait a certain time frame before TTC, or if I would be a good candidate for a VBAC when I am expecting the second child.

Re: Those who had c-sections

  • My dr told me at one of my post-partum appointments that if I want to try a VBAC I should wait at least a year to conceive.

  • This was a surprise baby so I don't know about TTC. As for having a VBAC I was told I was not a good candidate because both kids are close together. I think she said they like to have 2 years in between.

  • My OB had no problem letting me try for q vbac with Aidan. The hospital, however, wanted 18 months in between births, at least. Even then, though, they'd rather see a repeat c/s. I think 3 years between pregnancies is the magic number that they stop caring and actually leave the choice to you 100 percent.
Two c/s, though, mean no vbac. Ever.

Hope that helps. If you have any more questions, I did some pretty extensive research thinking I may get a vbac. So I would be happy to help.

  • I wanted a VBAC and my OB uses a Catholic hospital and my kids were 4 years apart so I could have. The minimum recommendation is 18 months but a lot of doctors and hospitals will try to talk you out of it. Lo ended up being breech so I ended up with a scheduled c. She gave me the option of scheduling after my due date to give Lo time to flip. My OB said it was good I had the csection, I forget her exact reason because she said it in the OR and I forgot to ask her why later. There were a lot of pros about the repeat scheduled c but I wouldn't choose to have surgery unless it was medically necessary. Part of me feels like I lost something by never having a baby vaginally but I did what was best for my kids.
  • I had an attempted (and failed) VBAC with DS and once again stalled out at 7 cm which is exactly where I stalled with DD.

I was terrified to tell my OB that I was pg again (when DS was only 5 months) but he didn't seem too worried.  He did, however, tell me that this will be RCS no questions asked.  I didn't argue.  I'm terrified of another c/s because I have awful recoveries but I figure a scheduled c/s has got to be better than laboring for a day or more beforehand.

  • My doc said a year between scars is the minimum recommendation but he likes to say don't TTC until your baby is a year.  Does that make sense?

  • Mine said 1 year between births at minimum. He's very pro VBAC so I'm hoping that's how things go next time around.
  • I had three c/s

I think now it is usually 12-18months for a VBAC, when I was Pg with Audrey they were not recommending them.  I am not a good candidate for VBAC anyways.  If your 1st c/s was for the baby's positioning or similar reason you are usually a good candidate.  For me I was labeled as failure to progress.  I went into labor on a Sunday with Oliver and after three hours of pushing he was born via c/s on  Wednesday afternoon. (I blame his broad shoulders)   I'm glad I had a repeat C when Audrey came out nearly 9.5 pounds.

  • I didn't have a c-section but my friend just had a VBAC and her doctors had recommended two years between, which she did.  She actually was 11 days late and had to be induced, which I guess most places don't usually do, but it was successful!

My other friend just also just had her fourth VBAC (fifth kid, first one was a c-section.) There is less than two years in between each of her kids (oldest is 7.)

  • from what I understand, it's advised not to have 2 within a year. I think they recommend waiting 6-12 months or so.

And your candidacy for a VBAC really depends on your initial C and your doctor.  The Feminist Breeder is sort of awful, but she has written a LOT about vbacs.

  • I had 2 c sections, 22 months apart. My OB told me to try and wait a year after DD before getting pregnant again and that was how it worked out.

  • I believe I was told a year to wait, however, we weren't interested in TTC until DS was at least 18mo.  I was going for a VBAC 2nd time around, but due to DD being breech, I had to go in for a repeat c/s.

  • A friend of mine just had a successful VBAC.  Her daughters are about 19 months apart.  From what I understand, it really depends on why your C was necessary.  They weren't sure if hers was because of her first daughter's size and positioning or because of the shape of her pelvis.  Turns out it was mostly due to size, since her second daughter was in a similar position but they were able to get her to turn since she was smaller.

Scheduled RCS is so much better!  It is the difference between night and day!

OMG yes! The scheduled one was so fun and exciting because you knew exactly when they were coming, we were able to have who wanted there at the hospital, childcare was so easy to arrange, and the recovery was a million times better.

  • Thanks ladies! There were a few factors into why I didn't have Gator vaginally. She was over 9lb, cord around her neck, not descending when I pushed....even though I only pushed 6 times, and her hand was by her face. So I don't know if it was her size was too big for my pelvis, or her hand being in the way, or what. I would just hate to go through labor as long as I did with Gator and be so exhausted that by csection I slept through part of it, and don't remember a lot of anything when she was born. If I have to have another csection I would like to not labor for hours on end before going into surgery and feeling like I missed it all.

  • My csection with DD was scheduled the week beefore she was born.  I loboured forever with DS because our hospital was so pro VBAC.  The recovery with DD was terrible DH left me alone in the hospital for about four hours on the second day (he went to go home and shower and have a nap) and the nurse basically had to camp out in our room because I still couldn't go to the bathroom without help.   With DS as soon as I could move my legs I was up an around, going for walks.  They told me that my next one could be different yet again.
