Rice cereal = constipation?

DS' pediatrician has us putting 1/2 tsp. of rice cereal in his bottle per ounce of breast milk, in every bottle. It has helped quite significantly, but he has gone from pooping almost every diaper to not pooping at all since Tuesday evening.

If you've given your LO rice cereal in their bottle, did it cause constipation?

I know that breastfed babies "poop less" according to the literature, but not my kid. He poops at least every other diaper and has at least two blow outs a day. So, for him not to poop at all, not even a smear, for two days is a little concerning to me. He doesn't seem to be uncomfortable and his stomach isn't hard.

    I don't understand why you are giving him the cereal is it for reflux?It is normal for a breastfed baby, at 2 months old, to still poop several times a day. It's also normal for them to start pooping much less up to once a week or more. Yes, rice is constipating. But not pooping isn't necessarily being constipated either.nbsp;

    Yea, he has reflux. On Zantac three times a day.

  • yes it can cause constipation.  We went through a terrible time with my daughter when giving her the rice in her bottle. We had to stop because it was really making her uncomfortable to where we had to give her pear juice, another time prune juice and when it got real bad we had to use a suppository :(   If you think it is causing problems with going to the bathroom  I  would discuss with the pedi for other options.
