Baby Names

Syllables

I have seen it on here before. Talking about not using the same amount or syllables for first and last names.

For instance my name is 3 for my first, 2 for middles and 1 for my last. Is there a formula any of you know that works best? like 3 2 1 or 3 2 3?

Sorry if this question seems foolish I am just curious!

Re: Syllables

  • I don't think its always bad to have the same number of syllables... Look at Jennifer Anniston
    Ashley Simpson
    Isla Fisher.
But I think the idea is that something like:
    Tim Cod isn't enough name.
    Mallory Malardy sounds too similar.
Catherine Seraphina Amoraldia is too much name.
Heaven Nevaeh Hope is too repetitive.
There are always exceptions to the rule, so I wouldn't get too hung up on syllables.

  • I have heard that as long as all three don't have the same amount, it works.  However, I think 2-2-2 is perfectly fine.  I take those "rules" with a grain of salt.  :)
  • I didn't put much into that formula. Our little one's name will be 3 3 2 & we're breaking other rules too though - there are lots of E's in her name!
  • Personally I think the syllable rules are ridiculous. I've never heard a name in real life and said "Oh, the syllables are all wrong! What were the parents thinking?!". If you like a name then use it...regardless of syllables.

I read this thread thinking the same thing.

  • I just try to not have all 3 names the same amount of syllables (ie. one of the names I make a different amount of syllables).  I guess I just like the flow better.
  • I think 2-2 syllable names sound fine together. My sons is 2-2-1, DD1 is 5-3-1, DD2 is 2-3-1, and baby 4 will be 3-4-1

  • I don't put much stock into the syllable thing. I think where the stresses in the names are, are a better indicator in how they flow, rather than syllables.

This.  Our last name has an emphasis on the second syllable, DS2 has a 2-2 name but because his first name stresses the first syllable it flows well.  Marie and Juliet, for example, don't sound good with our last name.
