BF Question

Hi,

I'm FTM and BF my 8 day old daughter. I've been having the normal issues with BF. Nipples are killing me and all that jazz. As of yesterday I've noticed more pain on my left side when nursing. The pain is nothing I can really describe, I've never had this type of pain before. But when I nurse on my left side, I have a pain that goes through my armpit and down my bicep. I did some googling and it turns out that I could have a clogged duct. So I've been massaging my breast and applying heat. That pain has not been there today since doing that, but now I have another and different pain in my left side that's there whether I'm nursing or not. This pain wraps around my back and feels like I have a knot in my back. My chest also feels tight across my front, like through my breast bone. It feels like a muscular pain. I would say my breasts are sore but not painful, even the lumps that I feel are just sore rather than that "holy crap" pain I've heard clogged ducts cause.

Is this all normal? I've tried supporting my back more and I make sure I'm comfortable while feeding- I'm just not sure what is going on. Is it worth a call to my doctor or a lactation consultant?

Hopefully this all makes sense- sleep deprived here!

Re: BF Question

  • yes, definitely make sure you are sitting in a comfortable chair and you are using a boppy pillow or such.

make sure you pump after feedings too. Maybe she's not emptying your breasts fully and that's what's causing the clogged ducts. Maybe when he's eating larger quantities he'll empty your breasts fully.
