Night Weaning ?

I night weaned my 15 month old about 2-3 weeks ago.  It went pretty smoothly he only woke up for a couple nights and he only fussed for maybe 10 minutes before going back to sleep and then he started STTN! thank god.

Well, in the meantime he got his first set of molars and of course was back up at night again, but could be comforted and then put back down.  Now the last four nights he has been up and inconsolable at around midnight.  He doesn't seem to be having any more teething pain he acts fine all day.  He is only having trouble at night.  Last night I nursed him back to sleep because nothing else seemed to calm him down and he went back to sleep.

Is he still upset about night weaning?  Even if he was mostly fine about it before?  I'm not sure how long it should take.....

  • I should mention, I'm posting here because I thought you ladies would have more experience with extended breastfeeding.

  • I mostly lurk here but have also just night weaned my 13 month old. I think it is fairly common for there to be some fits and starts with any transition.  She still wakes up but can mostly settle herself back -- when she can't it is so tempting to just feed her and I would as in your case where LO was just inconsolable.  I would then figure it might take another day or so to go back to usual.  I also follow the Wonder Weeks book and FWIW it does seem like sleep disruptions come at development (in addition to teething and other physical things) leaps so perhaps he is learning or trying to learn something new?
  • Are you nursing during the day? With both my boys I found I needed them completely weaned during the day and on solids before they would sleep through the night. I never needed to technically wean at night they just stopped waking up then.
  • Neither of my girls started STTN when I night weaned. DD1 woke up once a night until she turned 5. DD2 wakes up once a night, but if DH puts her back down in her crib, she'll keep waking up until she's in bed with us. She's been coming into bed with us after her first waking since she was an infant.

Both my girls were older when I night weaned (26 and 25 months), so I just kept telling them that they could have their milk in the morning when they were upset. Really, once they were in bed snuggled up to me, they were fine.

I wonder if he's having some separation anxiety in the middle of the night. I've also found that even if they're fine with teething during the day, the pain seems to bother them more at night. It's so hard to guess what's actually going through their heads.
