hernias?

At DS's 9 month the nurse practitioner who saw him instead of the dr. pointed out that he had a hernia in his belly.  There's a gap between his ab muscles right at his belly button.  We had never heard this before.  His belly button had always poked out but we just thought he had an outie!  Is this common, and does it usually correct itself?

Re: hernias?

  • DD had/has a herniated belly button. Her pediatrician said that it is pretty common, especially among preemies, low birth weight babies, and black babies. She told us that usually it goes away by the time the baby is 3, frequently even by age 1. DDs looks much better now, but I'm not sure if it is 'officially' healed. If it is not considered healed by age 3, then they usually do a surgery to fix it.

That's hilarious considering DS was a 9 lb. 5 oz. white baby born 2 weeks after he was due.

He must be special then. Smile

DD was small and a preemie. Go figure.

  • I had a herniated belly button and had the surgery when I was a toddler. Look at me now, I'm fine! Hopefully your little one will heal on his own.

  • My dd's pedi told us she had/has one too.  She was 7.11# and 2 weeks early.  He didn't seemed concerned about it at all.  To be honest, I kind of forgot about hers until reading this post.  Guess I should ask the pedi at her 9 month if hers is still there?!  But like previous post said, the doc said it should go away by age 3.
