Re: Not so good with real "food"...

  • We started with veggies steamed really soft. So in theory it was nothing she hadn't tasted before, just a new texture for the flavor. Also we did pancakes really early, so devoured those!!

  • Some of DS's first table foods were fruits - strawberries, blueberries, watermelon, peaches, etc. He started this really young though, so we did anything soft enough for him to mash with his gums. Steamed broccoli was also a huge hit (and still is) with DS. It might be easier to start your LO on fruit because of the sweetness.

  • DS does all table foods and does it pretty well now.  But, he still hoards food in his cheeks every now and then.  He used to do it a lot more, but has gotten better, so I wouldn't worry about the fact that your DD squirrels food.  Banana, avocado, eggs, and pancakes are good things to start off with.  Also remember, gagging is not choking.  They need to learn how to mash the food up with their tongue and sometime there is gagging.  It is all part of the learning process.  And sometimes it takes a little while.

Oh, and DS is 1 and we are still working on the sippy cup.  I have a feeling we will be on the bottle for a while still.

This. They have to learn how to move food around and gagging PREVENTS choking. I'm sure you don't mean she really chokes (like you have to do the Heimlich maneuver every time she eats those things), but I understand how gagging can be scary! My daughter has pretty much eaten whatever we've been eating since around 8 months or so. PPs gave some good suggestions for first foods.

  • DD has slowly gotten better and better.  Some current favorites are peas, spaghetti and shredded cheese.
