  • I always sad NO WAY to this question, but now that I'm doing more research and have heard stories from people (on both, hospital births and home births), I'm considering it. Now, my DH will hear nothing of it =D

If I decide to go natural, then I'd prefer to do the home birth. But if I want the security of meds....I'm trying to get in to a birthing center here in town.

  • I am ever so slightly interested in learning more about this...  While I don't think I could handle having our first one anywhere except a hospital, I am still open minded to most things pregnancy related.

  • I wanted a HB the first time and had an AWFUL experience with an over zealous anti-natural birth OB at the hospital that has COMPLETELY turned me off from trusting another OB.  I don't want to be at a hospital unless it is medically necessary... plus the whole 2 1/2 day obligatory hospital stay was ridiculous!  bahhhh lol I'm so so so looking forward to being at home this time! No annoying staff, no hospital bed, no uncomfortable and hot environment... and best of all, my baby would be with me when I have #2!

I guess no one asked, but that's why I'm planning a HB :P

  • I can't having a Vbac.

  • I'm using a birthing center, It's lovely and has more of a B&B feel than a hospital. I had a midwife throughout my prenatal care and delivery at a hospital (Kaiser) with my DD and loved how in charge of my care I was allowed to be, so I'm really looking forward to it this pregnancy. Also big plus, it's cheaper and the hospital is right across the street if there are any complications. I would not want to have to clean up that kind of mess at home! :P

What area are you in? I'm trying to find a good midwife...but I can't ask anyone for a referral because they don't know yet. But also because the people I know who use midwives...well they just don't want the same things as me.

  • One thing to consider is that you can't plan for all complications.  DS was born in a hospital and my labor was very routine.  I labored for a long time without progressing, took a nap and then suddenly woke up to DS right there!  I guess DS changed position when I was given an epidural and I progressed quickly in only an hour.  He was born so fast that I only pushed twice... and he was blue.  They gave him oxygen and got him breathing right away, and he was fine, but there was no indication that anything might be wrong before that.  Just something to consider if you're considering a home birth.  This would have been terrifying had I not been in the company of doctors/nurses and the NICU.

My next birth will be in the hospital as well, especially considering my doctor told me that I could progress this quickly again, and the only reason I labored so long the last time was because DS was in a funny position.  Then again, if I progress that quickly then maybe the next one will end up a home birth unintentionally.  Now there's something to worry about for the next 9 months.

I do agree that it would be more comfortable at home though.

  • To each there own but home births terrify me! Working in L&D I've seen way to many scary things happen in less then a second. I've also seen to many home birth moms come to us after things didn't go as planned and I can tell u those are some of the scariest situations I've ever been in.

I know we have lots of rules and aren't as comfy as home but we truly do have your and babies best interest at heart! I'm really sorry you had a crapy experience last time! Good luck with your home birth. I truly hope that its wonderful and perfect as many of them are!

  • Yes! As of now, planning a vbac at home with a pair of super experienced midwives. My hospital experience with DD1 was disappointing enough that I'm planning a different route this time, five years later. With experienced and qualified care providers that can accurately assess risk, and that know when and how to determine emergencies, your safety isn't necessarily as compromised as many tv shows make it out to be. There's lots of research available on the topic. Best wishes to all! :
  • And, if you are planning a VBAC, check out your local ICAN chapter. They will be a great resource of local drs and midwives in your area, in addition to VBAC info.
  • I'm too concerned that things might go wrong.  Plus, no matter how much I scrub, I never feel like my house is very clean, so I'm just not comfortable with the idea.  But I'm in awe of those who choose to do home births.  Good luck!

  • We had a home-birth with my first and it was fantastic. If you are already planning one then you are probably already aware of all the benefits so I won't wax poetic about them lol.

Unfortunately I'm not sure if we'll be able to have this one at home though. Last go around there were no midwives in any of the Austin hospitals so my insurance actually covered the home-birth. Their policy was to cover it if there were no midwives in hospitals within a 100 mile radius. Since 2008 though, that has changed, and there is a hospital in North Austin which has midwives. I haven't checked with my insurance yet but I suspect they won't cover a home-birth this time since there is a hospital/midwife option. That being said, I need to do a cost comparison since it is entirely possible that an uncovered home-birth would be cheaper than an insurance-covered hospital birth.

So long story short, we might be planning a second home-birth :)

  • No, I'm not going to have one.  I kind of want to, but for now we're planning a hospital birth, but I am switching to an OB who is natural birth friendly.  I will also be hiring a doula this time around.  I wanted a natural birth last time, but I found out that what you read is true; it's hard to have a natural birth in a hospital if you are not properly properly prepared advocate for yourself.  A birth center recently opened about 45 minutes from my house, and that's in the back of my mind if I become unsure about the new OB/hospital at any point during my prenatal care.

Good luck with your home birth!  I hope you'll post your birth story when the time comes. :)
