Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Those with LOs with dairy intolerance

When do you plan on reintroducing dairy to your LOs? Or have you already? DS's pedi recommends waiting till a year but I was just curious if anyone gave their LOs dairy yet and if they had any reactions. I tried giving DS cottage cheese and yogurt around 6/7 months but i think he still got a bit of a tummy ache yet so I may just end up waiting till a year or more.

Also if you formula feed and you did reintroduce dairy and they seemed ok with it, are you still keeping them on soy formula or did you switch?

Re: Those with LOs with dairy intolerance

  • I BF, so I have recently begun experimenting with dairy in my diet.  I've had some baked goods with milk or butter, and she has done fine.  I've had a small amount of cheese cooked, and it didn't seem to bother her.  I still haven't had raw cheese, milk, or ice cream - nothing obvious.  I'm hesitant to try anything like that, but I guess I won't know until I try.  I haven't given her any dairy, but I'd like to be able to give her cows milk at 12 months.  Moms I know with MSPI babies who formula feed have switched formulas first, and then introduced dairy directly into baby's diet.

  • My DD doesn't eat much solids/purees, but in terms of her formula, we've been on Alilmentum since about 1 month old b/c of milk protein allergy. We tried to switch back to regular forumla at 6 months and 9 months (per pedi recommendation), and both times was not good. We've been trying to get her to try WCM, but she doesn't really like it so far. If she's still on formula (or something like it) at a year old, we'll try switching back to regular formula again.

  • DD has a milk and soy allergy, she's been on Alimentum since she was 6 weeks old.  We tried going back to a milk based formula at 7 months.  She started projectile vomiting within 20 minutes and had diarrhea for 3 days.  We haven't tried again and my pedi hasn't decided if she wants us to try again or see an allergist for testing.

  • Our LO is MSPI and I BF so I have been on the diet since he was diagnosed at 8 days old (confirmed at 4 months with a "challenge" of adding dairy back to my diet). Per our pedi GI, I'm supposed to reintroduce soy at 12 months in my diet (he is less reactive to soy) and do that for a month. If that does not affect him, I'm to move on to dairy in my diet for a month. If that goes okay, then I can start giving LO stuff like yogurt and cheese before moving on to WCM.

According to our GI doc, every failed challenge increases the amount of time it will take for LO's gut to heal/mature, so doing it earlier than a year had the potential to extend the allergy.
