DD is 2 1/2 and we just had a new baby. Im trying desperately to get her to potty train, cause its awful changing two sets of diapers, and shes getting too big to be in diapers anyways. A few months ago, she went on the potty a few times and we rewarded and made a big deal about it. Then she just started to refuse to sit on the potty. I got her to sit on it today, put her big girl underpants on her and told her that we would try every 15 minutes or so to go on the potty. She sat, nothing happened. She ended up peeing in her underwear, but didnt say anything (its almost like she doesnt mind being wet).
Is she not ready yet? I feel so behind, almost all of her friends in our playgroup are trained. I feel so lost! I have no idea what I'm doing - Ive never potty trained anyone before! is there a book that you recommend? advice? help???
Re: Help. Im so frustrated.
Not all kids are ready at 2 years or 2.5 years or even 3 years. She's just adjusting to having a new baby in the house, so she's probably not ready for something new. What I've found is that you can't force a kid to sit on the potty. Even if you can hold them down, you can't force them to go.
DD2 initiated potty training when she turned 2. She started telling us she had to go while her diaper was still dry, so we started putting her on the potty. That lasted a few weeks before she started absolutely refusing to sit on the potty. We backed off and went back to diapers for a month. Then we started trying again, but for some reason on the second attempt she had a lot more trouble recognizing that she had to go before she was wet. I don't know what changed since she did so well before. It's been about a month now since then, and she's just started being accident free within the last few days. She's now 27 months.
DD1 was potty trained during the day at 2.5 years and now at 6.5 years if finally starting to wake up dry in the morning. She's been in pull ups at night.
My niece didn't potty train until after she turned 3, but she was completely dry day and night from the point she decided she was ready.
Another niece potty training during the day at 3 years but now at 5.5 years is still wet about half the time at night.
Another niece is 3.5 years and not consistently using the potty. She uses it, but she doesn't seem to care if she's wet either.
My friend's son is at about the same stage as DD2, and he'll be 3 yo in a month.
It just goes to show you that each kid is different, and they'll all potty train when they're ready.
