Anemia??

Anyone else's LO have anemia?

My guy was pretty low and I am a little worried. Not sure how this could be...he is breastfed, eats iron fortified cereals, lots of poultry, spinach, and other "iron rich" foods. They are starting him on a supplement and will recheck at 1 year appt.

I am (of course) feeling guilty and concerned. Not sure how common this really is.

Any words of wisdom from those with experience?

Re: Anemia??

  • My lo hasn't been diagnosed with that, but they haven't checked his iron levels.  I worry about that, however, since I have a hard time getting him to eat cereals or vegetables, and he is breast fed.  In addition, I have tried to get him to take Poly Visol (vitamin with iron), but it tasts terrible!  Did you lo have any particular symptoms?  Sorry I cannot offer more help.  I wish you the best.

  • LO had low iron when they did blood work at the hospital around 7 months old.  He was given straight iron sulfurous 3 times a day for about a month.  His count recovered enough that we can now just give him a vitamin drop with iron once a day.  We have been adding the vitamin to one of his daycare bottles each day.

Low iron is quite common with breastfed babies... Don't beat yourself up over it.
