Awake time for 2 to 3 month olds?

I have been trying to keep my 11-weekers on an eat/play/sleep routine, but I am not quite sure how long their awake time should be after they nurse. I don't want them to have to get them to the point of crying because they're overstimulated, but I don't want to try to put them down before they're ready. What do you all do?

  • I had a set awake time routine at that age, including some tummy time, tracking toys etc. It was very short because it took them a long time to eat (they were still BF then), but I always finished with them sitting in their bouncy chairs while I read a book to them. That way it was calm and I could keep a close eye on them to know when they were getting tired. As soon as I saw them getting sleepy it was a race to get them in their miracle blankets and into their cribs! :)

Great ideas, thanks! I need to remember to make better use of our bouncy seats.

  • I was always told the rule was no more than 2 hours of awake time between naps. So I worked the eat/play/sleep around this. My smaller twin couldn't even make it 2 hours, she needed to be put down after only 90 min. So I worked on her first and then finished up with the bigger twin and it worked well for me.

  • Here's a great post on wake times - https://www.babywisemom.com/2008/07/optimal-waketime-lengths.html

Keep in mind, wake time is from when they wake up until they go down for the next nap, not just after nursing.  So take into account how long they spend nursing when you're thinking about their wake time.
