so DH and his brother have their grandfathers' names as their middle names. Elmer and Elwyn.

DH has always complained about his mn, but now he's saying maybe he wants to use Elwyn on our theoretical future son.

would you use this name?  what would you call him?

It really all depends on how important using family names are to you and your DH. My grandfathers name is Elwin and I could never imagine naming my son that. But that's my own personal opinion and preference.

I'd pass it down as a middle name - but probably not a first. 

 

It reminds of the Barenaked Ladies song - Uncle Elwyn E! L! W! Y! N! That's Elwyn!

But that's pretty obscure.

I love the name for a girl. 

You could do a variation on the El-theme and try Elliot or Elijah maybe.

I thought this too- it looks like Elowyn.
