Anyone gone cold turkey with no bottles?

We've been trying for a while to get DS to sippy cups.  He'll usually do pretty well with water, but when I put milk in there he's not interested.  He wants his milk in a bottle.  He loves milk and he loves his bottles.  A friend of mine mentioned she went cold turkey with bottles when her pedi told her it was time for him to be off of them.  She said it was miserable for two days, but after that he completely forgot about the bottles.  We were thinking that on Sunday (Fri is his bday and Sat is his party) we'd give this a go.  It sounds like bottle CIO.  Has anyone else tried this with any success?

Re: Anyone gone cold turkey with no bottles?

  • His last bottle was last thursday. He has been taking a sippy for awhile but always preferred the bottle. I just put them all away and just offer a sippy. He has no problem at home, but he does cry at daycare when he sees other babies with bottles. I have a reusable juice box that has a rubber straw and he prefers that over even the sippy.

  • I haven't but I was just thinking of doing the same. Gator started drinking out of a sippy when she was 7 month old. But she will only drink water in it and refuses to drink milk. She is now 11mo and still gets a bottle before her morning nap, before her afternoon nap, before bedtime....and if she is sick or having trouble sleeping due to teeth, she will have another in the middle if the night. So I am thinking maybe cold turkey or only right before bed after her first birthday.

  • Violet would freak without her nap and night time bottle, you should see how excited she gets to have them.  Good luck, I'm going for a slow ween myself.

Sooooo I'm thinking the fact that my 2 year old still takes his milk in a bottle is a problem? He drinks everything else out of sippys and regular cups, but he will only drink milk from his bottle...one when he wakes up and one before bathtime. I've tried. That's a battle I have no desire to fight. I want him to drink the milk and until I feel ok with his milk intake decreasing, I don't care. I'm not really much help.

Oliver and Audrey were two before they gave up bottles too.  Make sure you are brushing their teeth.  We had no teeth issues here, but Iknow of other who have.  Honestly, I'm not one who feels the need to rush these things.  Everyone was potty trained and off the bottles and pacifiers before preschool!Wink

  • HELL NO, I have not had success. I tried to force the sippy cup on Sunday (all day) and he barely drank a sip. Finally, around 5 pm I gave him another sippy cup and he got all sorts of pissed off and kicked it across the room. I finally broke down and gave him his bottle back and he drank 9 oz in what seemed like less than 1 minute. A co-worker just bought some toddler cups for DS for his birthday and we will try those this week. Using just a cup was recommended to me by a reliable Mom who now has grandkids so I will try it.

  • We did. We're using the Nuby cups which are very bottle like. No issues.
  • We went cold turkey - but he didn't have an issue with it, so it wasn't a big deal over here.
