Being on-call for work

My DH and i are TTC and i am already wondering what is going to happen with my job. Some background- I am an IT Director and have to be on-call in case servers go down. Right now its every other week which is a lot. Most of the time i can fix a problem from home but others i have to come in asap.

So my question is have any of you been through this or have handled this? Is it possible to have a newborn and be on call?

Thanks!

Re: Being on-call for work

  • I'm a nuclear medicine technologist and have to take call. We just had to make sure DH was around for the babies in case I had to go in. Other than that, no additional issues. Call can really suck though especially when you aren't getting enough sleep as is. GL TTC!

  • I'm in consulting and am on call every third weekend. We aren't on call during the week, but there is an expectation that you will be available off hours once in awhile as needed. Like you, a good portion of the time I can do the work from home but sometimes I have to head out into the field. So when I'm on call DH just has to know that he may be needed to watch the kids and can't make set plans.
  • I take call about 5-8 times a month.   I also take home call and only go into the hospital if needed.  If I do go in, I always bring my pump just in case I'm there longer then expected or if LO wakes up and is hungry while I'm away.  Twice now my DH has been away when I've been on call and I had my nanny agree to be on call with me just in case I got called in ;0)

  • I am on call 45 times a month but I get to schedule when I am on call. I always pick times when DH is home and take my pump along just in case.

  • I was also on home call 4-5 times/month after #2 was born.  I also just tried to schedule call around when my husband would be home.  There was once that I was on call when he was also on call, and I ended up having to go in.  I took the kids with me, and they slept in their double stroller in the nurse's station.

  • I am on call about 3-4 times per month and my calls are in hospital calls.  my husband is on home call about 5-6 times per month.  fortunately we have been able to work it so that we are not both on call at the same time so the other is around for DS when one of us has to go in.  we currently use a daycare, but used to have a nanny, and she will still help us out when we are in a pinch and she has either been "on call" if we need her or has even slept over at our house when need be if DH and i couldn't rearrange our schedules.

  • I am a product manager for a global financial services company- basically on call 24/7.  I randomly get calls about urgent issues overnight and on weekends, probably about 1-2 times a month.  H is usually around so he just takes over watching E.  I can sometimes handle by phone, other times I just login remotely (I WFH 70%) and fix the problems.
