3 day old wheezing

My 3 day old little boy is wheezing and squeeking through his naps... its a scary noise but he doesn't seem to be bothered... I'm so afraid he will stop breathing ... he is also sneezing a lot, the nurses at the hospital said it was because of dry air. Is this common? Should I plug in the humidifier? His 1st appt isn't until Friday.

Re: 3 day old wheezing

  • Sneezing is normal, wheezing is not so much.  Call your pediatrician & ask for their opinion - they might want to see him this afternoon or tomorrow instead of Friday.  While you wait for the nurse to call you back, plug in the humidifier and keep a close eye on him while he's sleeping.

  • I would call if I heard wheezing. They will probably want to take a look at him.

  • That happened to my son and he was diagnosed with reflux. Take him in, wheezing is scary.

  • Another thing to look at is his chest. When he inhales can you see between each of his ribs? Like does the skin pull back between the ribs? If he was having serious breathing issues you would see something like that. Babies do snore sometimes though and u could mistake that for wheezing. But better to be safe than sorry I would call the doctor.

  • the wheezing may be just nasal wheezing from stuffed nasal passageways. Newborns tend to have smaller nasal passageways and bc of dry air may cause some slight congestion which would cause wheezing. If you listen w your ear up against your LO's chest and you don't hear any wheezes upon inhalation and expiration chances are its nasal wheezing which is normal. But always consult your Doc. if your super concern :)
