I have had 3 people say this to me recently (family and co-workers). Is this the polite way to say "maybe you should wear more makeup"? Am I tired YES!! I have a 5 month old and a husband who stays home with her mon-thrus but does NOTHING around the house. So yes I am tired but geez I don't think i look that bad.
Vent over!
Re: "You look tired"
That's a rude comment. I would respond with. Yo mamma looks tired.
Seriously I would be annoyed.

My MIL says this to me every time she sees me and when we talk on the phone she mentions how I sound tired. Whatever. I used to get annoyed by it (before I had three kids and was pregnant with another) but now I honestly don't even have the energy to be offended!
Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12
Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck. Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
This Cluttered Life
I got variations of this every single day for the first 3 months I was back at work. My responses changed depending on my mood: "yes, i'm tired again today"; "really! I thought I looked pretty good this morning"; "thank you"; and finally "go away". I was told I looked "haggard." This was harsh. He was well-meaning I know, but geez, not what I want to hear.
My DH stayed home with DS for a while, and at first he didn't do anything around the house. We had a few detailed conversations on what the expectations are, and I told him explicitly what I expect a stay at home dad to do. I work 40+ hours a week, then take care of a baby when I get home. All he has to do is take care of a baby. Clean when the baby sleeps; wear the baby to vacuum; mow the lawn when I get home from work. It'll work out. And at some point someone will tell you how great you look. You're a beautiful mama, with or without makeup.

Whenever someone says this to me, I always say back "really? I always feel like that's another way of saying someone looks like crap". That usually results in the person back-pedaling into an apology or some other "well...I meant...blah blah blah." It usually works to let them know I didn't appreciate the comment. Or I am a big fan of PP's "yo mamma looks tired" - that made me LOL.
Ditto this. When I spend a day at home with DS it is often more work than if I went to work!
I would tell them they look like a dumb*ss.
This made me LOL!
My LO still really sucks at sleeping. I often wake feeling like my eyeballs are bleeding. Of course, I don't actually know what that feels like, but I am guessing it is pretty close to how I feel sometimes.
On tonight's episode of Up all night, their baby wasn't sleeping. They said they felt like they were living like kidnapped journalists. Ha!
I'm told this every day "You look tired" I can't stand it...I know how you feel...Geez
