Pooping after every feed and mostly green : (

Dear Ladies,

my son is 3.5 months now and from last week he has developed a strange habit of pooping almost after every feed during the day...which means in 6 / 7 times feeds , he poops 4- 5 times...!

also, he tends to drink very little like for 5 minutes and demands milk more frequently...this means he just drinks foremilk every 1.5 hours ! And hence i think the green poop..When I try to feed him more - he just spits it all out a little later / starts pooping...

Similarly, in night he is so sleepy he will feed for a maximum of 5 minutes and then go back to sleep..

When I pump, I see for first 10 minutes it's just foremilk and only after that comes the hind milk. So my kid is not getting any fat : (

Any suggestions on how to deal with this situation ?

Thanks

Re: Pooping after every feed and mostly green : (

  • Your situation sounds exactly like mine. My son just went through a rough patch with breastfeeding. He only feeds for a few minutes before getting fussy, pulling off, crying, etc. His poops were green for about 2 weeks. I think part of it was due to him getting mostly foremilk, but part of it was also due to teething. He's drooling constantly and I'm guessing swallowing a lot of it. He's also started waking in the night again for feeds after STTN for almost 2 months. Probably because he's only getting foremilk during the day. My solution has been to feed him when he's sleepy because he's more relaxed and feeds longer. I've also been compressing my breasts while he feeds to keep him swallowing. It's getting better slowly.

  • That happened to us as well, green poops are no fun! What helped us when DD was nursing very frequently (every 1.5-2 hours) was to block feed. I'd offer the right breast, then offer the right breast again at her next feed. Then for her next feed I'd switch to the left breast for the next two feeds. It seemed to help her get more of the hind milk.

  • Have you thought of pumping and feeding it to him in a bottle, so the fore and hind milks are more mixed?
