STTN: gradual or sudden?

For those whose LO are STTN, did it happen suddenly or gradually? With my DD who is 2.5, she suddenly slept 7 hrs one night at 4 wks old. From then on, she slept longer and longer until she slept 12 hours a night. With my DS who is 8 wks old, be still gets up every 3 hrs for the most part. Sometimes he'll go a random 4 or 4.5 hour stretch. I just wondered if most people's LOs suddenly started STTN or gradually elf longer and longer until they were STTN.

Re: STTN: gradual or sudden?

  • IMO, it has a lot to do with age but also how their day is (when and how long they nap, as well as when their last feeding of the day is).

How are his naps? When does he "go to bed for the night" (i.e. does he have a bedtime? When is his last feeding?)

  • I agree, for the most part it depends on the day they have had. My LO STTN for the first time when she was about 5 weeks old, and has about 75% of the time since then. She still has her less active days where she likes to keep me up half of the night. But if there isn't much going on, errands and such, where she isn't spending too much time bundled up sleepily in her carseat, I try to keep her naps short and keep her entertained. Also, during the day she drinks 4 ounces at a time, but for her last feeding I make 6 ounces. She may not always drink it all, but whatever she drinks past the 4 ounces seems to help keep her content through the night. Good luck!

  • With DS, he was up every 3 hours until about 10 or 11 weeks old. Then, when I started putting him to bed at 7 instead of 11, he suddenly slept 7-2. Over the next few weeks, he stretched that time until he was sleeping closer to 12 hours.

  • Ours was sudden.  Lo was a very good sleeper from birth, doing three 4 hour stretches at night.  Then one morning I woke up and realized lo hadn't cried yet; he had slept for 10 hours!!!  He stayed sleeping like that until he was four months.  Then all bets were off and he suddenly was waking in the night again.  We had to sleep train at 6 months to get him sttn again.

  • Sudden at 8 weeks old. Went from waking every 90 minutes to sleeping a 6 to 10 hour stretch everyday for the past two weeks.
