natural bc?

i had my post partum appt today and talked to the doc about bc. basically she thinks my only option is mirena. i hate the idea. i may be wrong, but from reading about it, it seems that the device aborts the fertilized egg. i believe that egg is a baby and i just can't think of aborting them.

i hate the pill. i was on it a few years ago and i gained 30 lbs in a few months! it totally messed me up. it was yaz, and now it seems like they're finding all sorts of problems with it. i just don't want to mess up my body and i feel like introducing hormones messes with things. i just have a very sensitive system i guess.

does anyone use any natural methods? i feel kind of hopeless after talking with the doctor, like my only options are getting pregnant or hormones. help! i don't want to just not have sex with my husband until we are ready for another baby and i don't want hormones. what can i do?

    Condoms.

This!  I've used only condoms and didn't get pregnant until I wanted to.  BC scares me.

  • The mirena does not prevent the egg from becoming fertilized, but prevents a fertilized egg from implanting, so if that bothers you, then it's not the right BC for you. As pp said, condoms are always an option. Otherwise, the paraguard iud works by incapacitating the sperm so that it can't fertilize the egg. Maybe that would work for you.

  • You could try fertility awareness (FAM) which involves taking your waking temp every morning and charting it as well as checking your cervical mucous and position. There is a great book called "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" that explains it. You can use the Fertility Friend website to chart. I used it when TTGP but it can be used for TTA also. If you do FAM, I would use condoms in addition until you really know what you are doing.

This, 100%. Granted, we are not super duper fertile, but we used it successfully for 2 years while TTA. There really is a science to it if you read the book.

  • Stupid condoms. I'm on the mini pill, but I keep forgetting to take it, so we'll be wearing our raincoats for a couple months...or at least until I can get into the habit of taking it.

  • Natural bc= abstinence

Hehe but seriously, condoms! They suck, but they work most of the time. I just don't want to rely on them alone because they can tear... And I'm not down with that.

  • A diaphragm plus spermacide is about 80% reliable.  It would probably work out best if you coupled it with FAM. But nothing is 100% reliable except abstinence. Good luck.

  • Mirena also incapacitates the sperm the same way paragaurd does and in 30 of women stops ovulation all together due to the hormone coating. I'm very sensitive to hormones and it worked great for me. I know it stopped me from ovulating because I didn't have a period at all on it.

This! It's what we use, successfully so far.

All of this exactly.  The book is awesome, and it explains everything very clearly.  I've used this method for years (TTC, TTA, and TTC again), and it's worked perfectly for us.
