Babies: 9 - 12 Months

9mo and not babbling

DS has been in the tail end of sitting, crawling, etc... he JUST started to crawl (army crawl) He talks (and complains now that he is teething like crazy) a lot. But not babbling (like saying Mama, Dada, Baba) I have been singing to the tune ABC's but saying mama, dada, and baba forever....almost since day 1! Anyone else's LO babbled late and when did it start. Just had 9 mo apt and I always come away feeling awful.... like DS is behind. I also talk to him all day long (and read). I just don't know what I should be doing more if anything!

Re: 9mo and not babbling

  • My DS will be a year tomorrow and only says mama, dada, and hi (occasionally). I like to think that I take care of his needs before he can ask for them, so he doesn't 'need' to talk! :) I wish he told me with words when he wants to nurse, go outside, etc. but he cries, brings things to me, etc. I honestly wouldn't worry much about it. My DS doesn't speak, but is reaching other milestones at the right time. No two children reach milestones at the same time!

  • Don't feel awful!  I always felt like my first DS didn't babble and by one he was barely saying dada but one day starts saying gaga (for doggie) and now at two and a half he won't stop talking EVER!   They all develop at their own pace so it's hard to say what's normal.  I would say as long as he is recognizing voice and interacts with you in other ways when you talk/sing to him he's just fine.  Just keep talking to him and interacting with him and one day, before you know it, you're going to be praying for some silence.

  • My little one just turned 9 months and just started saying mama.  He's been too intent chewing on everything and trying to be mobile.  I read where some babies become mobile first and others become verbal first.

  • My daughters both have been also at the tail end of everything. They are preemies though but still I have always been a worrier. My one daughter literally JUST started babbling "dadadada" the other day while my other daughter has yet to. She makes tons of sounds but no double consinent babbles. They have been evaluated mulitple times by ST's, OTs, PTs, etc....since they're preemies but have come back fine. I wouldn't worry. Every baby gets it in due time. It seems like my girls are always a few weeks a part in catching up to the other. If you're still really worried address it w/ your pediatrician.

  • I was telling my mom a few weeks ago about how my DS was not babbling. The next morning all he wanted to do was babble "ma ma ma" and "ba ba ba" and then I swear "blah blah" blah". So it literally happened over night. Every baby takes their own time. I *think* I read that they should be babbling by 11 months but I don't remember my source.

  • Mine started babbling shortly after his nine month appointment - so it could happen any day for you!  My doctor said they don't worry until 1 year.

And FWIW, my kid says a bunch of word now, and still doesn't say Mama or Dada
