Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Not pooping!

DD is 9 weeks old and is EBF.  She has not pooped in 3 days.  She normally poops with every diaper change.  The doc says not to worry until 5 days as their patterns can change.  She is very fussy today but had her shots this morning so I assume that is the reason and not her stomach.  Any ideas on how to get her to poop?  She had her temp taken this morning and still nothing...

Re: Not pooping!

  • I was going to suggest temp taking...seems to work every time for me.

  • They say that BFed babies can go a few days w/o pooping.  It would still bother me though if LO went that long... Curious to see what people say as far as ways to help them poop, because I have no idea.  Although, I think I heard once that a warm bath could help.
  • She might be fussy from the vaccines rather than not popping. The not pooping after 3 days is fine if she is EBF.

  • Oh my I was just going to post this same question. My DD is also 9 weeks, and has not pooped since Saturday. She does have some smelly gas, and she is EBF.

  • My pedi told me to give my son an ounce of 50% water/50% prune juice 2x a day.  It's helped tremendously. I also give him gas drops to help with the gas pains he has.  Good luck.

  • Perhaps it is a 9 week thing. My DS is also 9 weeks, I was about to post the same question! Used to have one huge poop once a day, he hasn't gone since Sunday! He's also EBF.  Maybe this is a digestive system growth spurt/change week...

  • I'm experiencing the same thing with my twins, more so with the first. She goes 3 days, increasingly fussy. Constantly passing gas by day 2. Someone told me to give them a little water, just under an ounce, between feedings, and it has seemed to help, but not fix it. I'm going to try the prune juice, I was told just put a few drops in an ounce of water. It's sad to see them so uncomfortable... pedi just said "it's their digestive system getting used to the formula". They've been on straight formula for almost 2 weeks now, with about half or one feeding of breastmilk a day since that's about all I have. The water and some "exercises" gets things moving for my other twin. We bicycle the legs, do squats, sit ups all very gently, and she poops. But both are constantly straining, grunting. They're 2 months old on the 15th.
I would suggest you try a little water between feedings first. It helped my brother in laws newborn, he's about a month old. You could try the "exercises". Sometimes a good belly rub will do the trick. I think you rub clockwise but don't quote me on that. It's one or the other.
  • DS is breastfed with an occasional supplement of formula.  About 3 weeks ago, DS went from pooping several times a day to pooping once every 4-6 days.  He doesn't seem uncomfortble at all, and when he does poop, it is runny.  At his check-up today, his pediatrician said it was completely normal and not to be concerned unless he is pooping less than once a week, he seems uncomfortable, or his stool is hard.

  • My DD has gone up to 6 days without pooping.  She is also 9 weeks and EBF.  My doctor said its not an issue and that she will regulate soon.
