Need help chosing a nipple for preemie

Hi everyone

i have somewhat of an issue. My girls were in the NICU for a short pd of time. while I was pumping BM, the nicu was using the medela storage bottles along with the similac disposable nipples. Im out of those nipples now and DD doesn't like the "born free" that I have. Does anyone know of a smilar nipple to the similac? She's still preemie and her mouth is small... I think she needs a slow flow type.
I can order the smiliac disposable ones but they are $1 a piece and I literally throw them out after one use.

TIA

  • I believe there are some latex gerber nipples that will work. We were having nipple issues also. Someone on here recommended the gerber one's. I rememer seeing them in the store. Never bought them though. I ended up trading formula checks on the swap spot board for the disposable nipples. There were 2-3 people that had a random 4-5 left over. Might ask there and on the preemie board. Also, I think most people would say they use them more that one (just hand wash them. don't put them in the dishwasher or the steam bags). We would use them for about a week, then toss them.

  • You can wash and reuse the Similac nipples. If you buy the box of newborn nursers in the store, they only come with one nipple for 8 bottles. I wash mine in the dishwasher (on the top rack, in a Munchkin dishwasher basket) and they come out fine.

  • My girls were in the NICU too, and they gave us those disposable nipples, we're still using them, discharged September 8th. But there are only 6 of them, so we sought out some more nipples. Most were too stiff, but we finally found the Dr Brown's. They are both slow and soft, and they are the same size ring, so they fit the Medela storage bottles.

We also use Dr. Brown's level one.

  • DS was not a preemie but had issues with gagging on formula, we found Babies R Us carries "Preemie" stage Dr. Brown's, it's a step below the Stage 1/slow flow nipples and they work wonderfully for him. I haven't seen them anywhere else but BRU, be aware too if you buy the 2oz Dr. Brown's bottles that say "perfect for preemies" they do not have the preemie nipple...they have the stage 1. We actually had to buy the bottles and then a pack of the preemie nipples (pink label).
