Night Shift before GD test?

Ugh I just noticed that my next appointment (the one with the 1 hour glucose test) is at 0830 am following a 12 hour night shift for me.

Now I am nervous that I am going to fail the dang thing because I will be up and eating throughout the night instead of sleeping.  I certainly cannot fast for 12 hours and I don't want to eat completely differently but I don't want a false positive just because i was up all night!

Has anyone had this?  What did you/should I eat and when?  Or should I scrap the whole thing and reschedule?

  • I was told it is perfectly fine to eat before, just eat on the 'healthy side'. I ended up having scrambled eggs, toast and peanut butter for breakfast. Then a light lunch of a salad with grilled chicken, cottage cheese and some veggies.

  • I would inform them when you get there that you've been up all night. I also was told to eat a little something before my appointment, and some women have their glucose test mid-day so overall I think you'll be okay!

  • I had my one hour test at 4:30 in the afternoon so it wasn't all that different.  Unless your doc specifically wants you to fast you will be fine.  If you need to fast then reschedule.
  • I had mine yesterday. I had absolutely NO instructions. My doctor told me that I did not need to fast and did not need to eat differently. My test was at 2:30 and she had the results back before the end of the day and I passed. I'm not sure why doctors do things differently, but I ate normally, and had a soda for lunch and was fine. Don't stress too much!

  • You're not supposed to fast before the 1-hour test anyway (that can actually make it possible to fail the test when you otherwise wouldn't). I was just told not to eat anything for an hour prior to the test, but otherwise no dietary restrictions before that. You should be fine!

  • My doctor has said each time to eat totally normally, just avoid any kind of massive sugar blast, like a huge plate of pancakes w/ syrup or big bowl of Captain Crunch. You are not supposed to fast for the one hour. I've passed each time after eating totally normally at breakfast and lunch and having the test around 4:30.

  • I did my test yesterday.  I was told to eat 2 hours before the test. Eat something with protein and not a lot of carbs or sugar. Like pancakes and syrup.   I also work in a lab where we do these tests. We notice a trend of pregnant ladies failing if they eat just prior to the test or drink the drink while they eat a meal.  I'd suggest what my doctor said.  It's going to give you a more accurate test. Also, if you feel a little sluggish or blah afterwards eat some more protein. It will help.
  • if it's like mine, you can eat, drink whatever up until you drink the glucose which is exactly 60 minutes before the test. then you cannot eat or drink anything, chew gum, smoke, whatever until you have your blood drawn.

  • Thanks guys, I feel better now!  I just would hate to fail the dang thing for a stupid reason. :)

  • I worked the night before mine (my appointment was at 1 pm...I got off work at 7 am).  I was allowed to eat a light breakfast.  Only restriction was NPO (no water, food, gum, etc) for 2 hours prior to test.
