Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Tylenol before 2 month shots?

My little man has his first round of shots tomorrow. And I'm already dreading it. I remember bawling like a baby when my daughter had hers. I want to make him as comfortable as I can so I was reading that a little Tylenol before can make them less fussy afterwards. But then I read that giving them Tylenol interferes with the vaccines doing their job.

What do you think?

Re: Tylenol before 2 month shots?

  • My mom told me to give Tylenol before LO's shots and said she did this for me and my siblings.  I didn't do it for LO mainly because I didn't have any Tylenol.  I don't know about it interfering.  Call the doc before you go in and see what they say.

  • With DS my pediatrician at the time told me to bring the Tylenol with me and to give it to him after the shots. He then told me to give it to him every 3-4 hours for 24 hours to prevent fever. I asked our new pediatrician (we moved) at our last visit about preemptively giving the tylenol before the 2 month shots, she just said to call before to get the correct dose and that it would be fine. I am planning on bringing it and giving it to her in the office.

  • It seems that the advice has changed. It used to be that you'd give it to them beforehand, but yeah, I guess it was found that the tylenol would do its job a bit too well and could prevent a strong enough immune response, so now we're suposed to give it right after the shots.

  • My pedi said to have some handy, but not to give it unless they ran a fever after the shots.  Mine didn't so I didn't give him any and he was just fine.

  • I've heard of a lot of moms giving their LO tylenol before/after...but I'd double check with your pediatrician. Mine told me that she doesn't suggest giving tylenol to babies under 3 months of age. Also, if your LO were to get a fever from the vaccines, the doctors want to know about it rather than mask it with Tylenol.

Same here. He told me 1.25 ml only if she needs it, it was her 2nd hep b. When they get older, it's safer. Mine was fussy afterwards but no fever. I do remember giving my now 3.5 year old Tylenol before shots as that pediatrician had recommended, but she was older. It helped with the swelling, fever, etc. It may depend on the type of shot, but my baby girls did find with their hep b's

This. I am not a fan of giving meds unless they are needed.

  • Thanks everyone. I didn't give him any before but did about 3 hours after the shots. He has been sleeping all day. Poor little guy.
