1 Year Dr. Visit... I am getting nervous.....

My DS just turned 1 today! Which means the Dr. is tomorrow :( I am nervous about the following:

1.) I still nurse DS 4-5 times per day. I am nervous about the WCM discussion and her mentioning weaning. I dont have a plan to wean, I just figured he would do it on his own. We do not drink dairy in this house so naturally, I do not want DS drinking it. We (my husband and I, not DS, he only has breastmilk and water) have soy or almond instead. DS does eat yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese etc...

2.) Worried about the doctor "checking" his intact penis by just pulling the skin down "just a little bit" to "check" as she says even though I have asked her and even written a letter asking to not do this. I believe the boy should be the only one to retract at all even just a little bit. I get extremely anxious over this.

3.) DS had been running since 10 months old. He is very independent and active. I am worried about doctor saying he has not gained enough. He looks very healthy to me he isnt skinny and isnt chubby. He is growing taller for sure. I just dont want her to tell me I am not feeding him enough. I offer 3 meals and sometimes snacks if he seems hungry plus nursing 4-6 times per day.

4.) The dreaded shots. We only give DS 2 at a time, but now that hes so much older, I just feel he has a better grasp on things and after he gets the one he will be screaming bloody murder and the 2nd shot is just going to be so much worse. He is just his own little person now and I feel bad, I just feel like his emotional reaction to the shots are going to be much worse. :(

I am just a ball of nerves..... can you all just tell me how your 1 year appointments went? What did you and doctor talk about? How did shots go? etc?? Just fill me in!

Our doctor is a good doctor but our parenting styles are different therefor her advice and what I actually want to do are different.

Thanks so much! <3

Re: 1 Year Dr. Visit... I am getting nervous.....

  • 1) I'm still nursing at least that much, often more.  I mentioned that I'm hesitant to give cow's milk (for many reasons that I won't get into now), they said introduce it slowly/gradually and I just did the smile and nod.  As long as she's nursing, I don't intend to give her any other milk.  When she weans (whenever that is; I also have no plans in place) we'll figure out whether we're going to give some cow's milk (definitely not a ton, though) or alternatives.  BTW, they say to be careful of soy milk for young ones because of the hormones.

    2) No advice.  I don't see the issue, but if you have a problem with it just stop her.

    3) At this stage, they're not usually that concerned about how much weight they're gaining as long as they're not dangerously underweight or losing weight.

    4) The shots were worse than the previous ones, but then again Lily didn't even notice her 6 month shot.  This time she got 3 and they were in the arms instead of the legs.  The nurse got another nurse to come help her and they both did a shot in the arm at the same time, then one of them did the third.  The third was definitely the worst 'cause she was already pissed off.  So if you're only doing two, ask if they can have a second person come and do them at the same time.  Even with the third, Lily screamed for a minute, cried for another couple of minutes and was over it within about 5 minutes.  She has a bit of a red bump on the one arm and was extra sleepy the day of her shots, but other than that she was completely fine.

    Good luck!  It'll be fine.

  • I can't really help with much of this, but here's how ours went:

    1) My doctor didn't bring up nursing or WCM or anything.  I brought it up since I want to stop pumping during the day which will mean eventually I'll be supplementing with WCM.  My doctor waits for me to bring up any concerns with feeding.

    2) My son is circumcised, so I have no clue what this is about, but I can say that I would want my doctor to check whatever she had to, to ensure my son was healthy.  My doctor checked for adhesions and to see where the testicles were.

    3) I think it's natural that babies are losing/maintaining/gaining slowly at this age. Mine isn't at all, and the doctor said that was unusual - but not bad.  He's perfect and growing, just more than most babies.  He kind of hit his growth spurts later.

    4) We did 4 shots (the 3 required and a flu shot).  We had a fabulous nurse who has them all ready to go in-hand and they were all done within seconds.  Less than a minute.  He was pretty upset, but was totally fine as soon as I picked him up.

  • We don't have our 1 year appt. until next week because the Doctor is out of town.  I was just going to suggest that if you have different parenting styles, have you thought about going to a different Pedi, maybe more along the lines of your parenting philosophy?  I'm sorry that you are a ball of nerves, I hope that things go smoothly for both you and your little guy today.
