babywearing in cooler weather

I'm new to babywearing and was wondering about how to dress LO for the cooler weather when we're out and about. I wear him in either my mei tai or my ring sling, depending on what we're doing.. It's in the 50s here now, but will get into the 40s shortly. How should I dress DS to make sure he's warm enough if we have to take a bus across town or to walk the dogs? I'm so worried about him getting too cold. TIA.

  • So far I've been putting a hoodie on DD when its cool here. But I might do what my mom did with me if possible; wear a bigger jacket for myself and zip it up around the both of us while wearing DD. That way its easy to open the coat when stopping inside somewhere without having to adjust DD in her carier.

This is definitely the easiest solution for a front carry.  There are also babywearing vests and jackets as well as carrier covers out there that might also interest you if you are out in the cold regularly - peekaru and kindercoat are two that are easy to find.  For a non-mobile baby (one that's not going to be getting down to walk) I find it works better to share a coat vs. putting a coat on each of you as it's harder to wear over winter clothing.

  • The peekaru is great, I loved it with DS2 he's a fall baby, so I used it quite a bit with him. Giant coats work well, too.

  • Last year I dressed my little guy in normal clothes (tops and bottoms, whatever he'd wear inside) and got myself large coats and sweaters I could wear over both of us.

  • I do the too big coat thing too lol. I have seen coats that are made specifically for BW, but I don't remember what website I saw them.

  • I bought a clearance XL coat from Old Navy for $17 to zip up around the both of us.  I didn't dress DD in anything more than usual because my body heat kept her warm.  This worked through a Wisconsin winter (though it was "warm" last year).
