pumping room in use

Next week the empty office I use for pumping is going to be in use from 7am-noon for employee wellness screenings.  This is a once a year thing my company does to help people get discounts on their insurance.  My problem is there is no way I can wait until noon to pump.  I usually pump at 830, 1130 and 230.  So my question is what should I do.  I figure I have 3 options.1) go into work after I pump in the am (but I am hourly so should i expect to have to stay late that day to make up my hours?  I am not willing to stay at the office until 6 or 7) 2. Pump in the bathroom/car (however it is fall in Ohio and not so warm) 3.  go in as normal and hope I am not in complete agony.

HR knows this is a problem for me but all the said was "we'll figure it out"  Well I like to plan a head and I don't want it to be the day before and have no clue what is going on.  Also this is the only empty office/conference room in our building (small office) and I share an office so pumping at my desk is not an option.

 Thoughts??

Re: pumping room in use

  • I'd just use my car, but if HR said they will figure it out maybe they have an idea.

  • I would follow up with HR either Wednesday or Thur of this week and ask them what room they have set up for you to pump in next week. Just assumed they figured it out and you are just following up so you know where you can go first thing on Monday am. If they don't have a solution ask them when they will.

Worse comes to worse, you could always pump in the car. But that should be your last resort. Don't tell HR its an option. :-)

  • The car is a good option  but wait to see what HR will do.  I was way more comfortable reclining in my car seat listenning to the radio than sitting hunched over a desk.Smile

  • Agree with the others. Check to see what HR has come up with. Could they possibly see if there will be an empty office that day (someone out?)

  • I should probably add the only office with blinds is the one I pump in.  But I will talk to them this week.  Im guessing I will be pumping in my car.
  • I pumped in my car for a year in Wisconsin...just turned the heat on when I was pumping.

  • I would use my car if in your situation.
  • Another option, option #4 if you will: find a relatively quite part of the office (perhaps an empty cube?), no door needed really, and set yourself up to pump there with your nursing cover on. You can face the wall so others aren't wondering what you're assembling under there.

I'm currently on an international work trip with all male collegues who know nothing about pumping, but with meetings all day long, my only option is to pump in the back of the van during the ride from one meeting to the next. My **THIS IS SPAM** Cover has kept me sane.

    Good luck!

ps - is there really no other place for HR to host this thing? That's pretty disrespectful.

  • I used to pump in my car all the time- turn on the engine and the heat, put up a sunshade in the front window and pump in the back seat if you have better tinting back there, and use a nursing cover.  The medela car adapter works great if you have a PISA.

  • Just use your car (if it's cold, run the heat!) or use a closet or bathroom.  It's only one day, I think you could find a place without involving HR.  Can a boss or coworker with their own office just let you use their office for 30 minutes?  I pumped in a server closet for a year - closets with outlets are great pumping spots!

  • I use the building's bathroom every day. I can't say it's my favorite, but it's quicker than going down to my car (which I did once b/c the big stall was in use when I needed to pump).  You'll be fine in either the bathroom or your car, especially since it's just one day. It's nice that you have a private room for use most days. My HR dept wasn't exactly accomodating when I came back to work. I got told "you can use the bathroom or the storage closet".  Confused
